best way to make a widescreen clip from a 4:3 one?

I shot some footage in 4x3 but later decided to do a wide project from it - the framing is decent enough that i can crop out the top and bottom. What i'm doing now is putting the footage on the timeline and just making the size of it 134%. naturally, the footage looks a bit soft but it's tolerable. is there a better way to do this?
If i shot wide to begin with, the camera still records the same pixels (with top and bottom cropped - not anamorphic).. but i dont have to do the stuff with 134% enlargements (at least i dont think you do) .. so i wonder if i can get premiere to natively recognize the 4x3 footage as 16x9 and automatically crop the top and bottom

well, you cant get it to do it automatically that i can think of off hand, but with a few clicks you can do it. just select all your footage in your project bin and interpret it as 1.2 pixel aspect (for widescreen DV) using the interpret footage command by right clicking, and then when your footage is on the timeline, you can use the "crop" effect under the transform section of the video effects, and crop the top and bottom by roughly 13% (...im short on time, so ill let you figure out the exact # to get perfect 16:9) and select the "zoom" option. anyway, this will crop your footage and expand it to fill your 16:9 frame. then all you have to do is blanket the same effect you already created to all the clips on the timeline. just select them all, and paste the effectto everything at once. then youll have all your video on the timeline cropped and stretched to 16.9. should take about half a minute to do it the first time, and a few seconds after that for any additional clips.
