Best way to give footage out to PC users from EX?

I've been having a headahce problem giving my footage to people who are on PC's (Or just not on set ups with FCP).

I was curious if anyone had experience on how to export and send footage to others (Actors, directors) who weren't on Mac's and who are on Macs without FCP.

Thanks!

Give them the original footage. Do NOT give them the Quicktime files. The original .mp4 or MXF files are easily readable by Windows systems, but once your editing program converts them to quicktime files, they're not readable on Windows.

So leave them in the BPAV format? And just give them all the folders like that?

This will work for people just to watch the footage? Or just for editing systems?

Thanks for the response Barry.

It'll work for editing systems. I don't know about for just watching; I just tried some BPAV .mp4 files (double-clicking them) and it gave an error...

You can copy the whole folder and give them a copy of Sony Clip Browser. Or they can use VLC media player to play the mp4 files.

If you want to let them watch the edited version. Ask them what format do they use in their PC.

I just worked for an out of town producer, before hand I suggested that she bring a laptop with her so I could download the video files to her computer. I brought Sony's Browser 2.6 on a flash drive, installed the software on her laptop and transferred the footage from the EX1R to her hard drive. The producer was impressed how easy the whole process took. She loved the idea that she could review the footage on her flight home! Good luck...

Yep, that's the way to go - have them install the Clip Browser software, and give them the camera original files; then they can review it through the clip browser or use the footage in their NLE.

To suggest an appropriate answer you would need to more precisely define what you mean by "giving"? Do you mean sending out low-res review footage? Do you mean handing over prime-quality footage for someone else to edit? Or what?

For low-res review stuff, I just convert the footage to WMV right inside the ClipViewer. I can then just post the WMV file on a website, etc.

For handing off original-quality footage, I just give them a copy of the original file structure right off the memory card. The Clip Viewer (and its format conversion options) is just as functional on PCs as it is on Macs.

We give Cineform files. Player is free. Great Codec.

If you are handing over the original content to someone else to be edited, I see no advantage in pre-selecting some codec that the customer may (or may NOT) be able to use. Hand over the original files and let THEM use the Sony Clip Viewer to transcode the content into the format/codec of THEIR CHOICE. Why would you want to do anything else?

We don't make our clients load the Clip Browser anymore... That might be OK if someone wanted to see ALL the camera footage, but it's not for the faint-of-heart non-techie person. We've found most can now easily view newer QuickTime time files on PCs... so it's not a problem.

If you're "giving the footage" for them to be able to both VIEW it and EXPORT it for their NLE, by all means give them the original, full BPAV structure.

However, ClipBrowser is not the best viewer (in full screen mode, it can drop frames and/or "tear" the image). While they might need CB for exporting (or otherwise processing) the footage, I'd also include the (free) VLC player.

Not many people have noticed that VLC is intelligent enough to play all MP4 clips within their own \BPAV\CLPR folders, when you choose "Media->Open Folder", and direct it to the BPAV root. It will then look into each CLPR subfolder, and play the contained MP4 clip - one by one. Or, you can click "Next" to go to the next one, etc.

It's much, much better than the CB at playing back the EX HQ files full screen!
