Best way to get clean shadows with the DVX?

I posted this question in the cinematography forum a bit ago and was told it could get more play here or in the lighting forum. If this counts as blatant cross posting I'll get rid of the post. I'm wondering how one can get good, relatively clean shadows on the DVX100. Would it be best to shoot the shadow areas slightly underexposed then crush them down farther in post? Or shoot them underexposed then crush them in camera? Or just shoot them underexposed till they are completely black and don't do any processing?
