Best way to find work?

I live in the South Florida area, and surprisingly find it quite difficult to find work on film/video. Craigslist provides little to no help and the people I do know provide very very little work. I was wondering if anyone knows of maybe a website or listing or a technique even to finding these jobs. WHen I say jobs I mean pretty much anything having to do with video or film jobs, television or movies, grip or camera work. Are all the grips and ect. I see on sets most likely employed by companies? Basically If you have experience in the situation I'm describing, I want to know..what did you do? How did you find jobs? Did you get hired by a company? How did you find them...

finding work on Craigslist is like chasing your tail. I still check it often and have yet only had a handful of decent outcomes. You're better off checking production-related websites (like the ones below) that cater to those in the industry. You can search for jobs and post some information about yourself so if someone needs something done in your area and they do a search your name pops up. Don't hold your breath I've only been contacted that way a few times. BUT, those websites I listed have yielded a bunch of interviews and several gigs.
However, I think word of mouth is hands down the best practice for finding work. Make sure all your friends and their friends know what you do. there is nothing wrong with promoting the **** out of yourself as long as you're friendly about it and can back up what you're selling. my friend couldn't shoot a few gigs last fall and his boss asked him if he knew of someone who could. my name came up and now I have a full time video production job working for the same guy at the marketing and communications department of a great university. it's all about who you know. cliche? yes, but it's true.

and don't forget the social media sites: i.e. facebook, twitter and linkedin. those can yield results in nontraditional ways

best of luck in the job search :)
