Best way to combine 30p, 60p, & 24p in one project?

Hi Gang,

I am having some trouble with a project. I have a client I shot some 720 60p stuff at a convention for.

He also sent me stock footage of NYC he wants in it... this is in 720 30p.

I also have some scenes that need to be intercut that are higher resolution 1080 24p.

What is the best way to handle this? Most likely editing in Sony vegas 9d (9e just came out but I'll leave well enough alone)

I know if I do a 720 30p timeline there is no issue with the 60p stuff and the NYC 30p stuff.. but what will happen to the 1080 24p stuff?

If I do a 720 24p timeline.. I imagine the NYC 30p stuff will look awful.

What would be the best approach to this?

What does the client want? If they are ok and want 720P, downres the 1080 material and cut in 720. If this is going to web or dvd 720 should be fine. Otherwise you're going to have to upres all your 720 material to 1080P, which will just make it look softer. And if you cut in 720 30P you won't even need to remove pulldown on your 1080 material, it should fit right into your timeline.

In a 24P timeline your 30P material will be a little slomo. I would do 720 30P.

The client just wants it to 'look good' I believe in is destined for a youtube HD so I don't need to go up to 1080, I think I need to bring the 1080p down to 720.. I was thinking 720 30p as well too.... but what will happen to the 24p in a 30p timeline?

Whenever I have to use 30p footage in a 25p project I conform the 30p footage to match the timeline. It slows it down noticibly but as it is normally b-roll I do this with it doesn't matter too much. Speed changes might be much less distracting than other methods which might result in ghosting from blended frames or stuttering from dropped/duplicated frames.

Of course you'll need to take into account audio - if you need audio from a particular shot, does it have to be perfectly synced (eg interviews) or can it be wild (eg street ambience)?
