Best way/program to level audio

The SCS Wave Hammer plug-in (comp/limiter & maximizer) works very nice.. providing it's used intelligently.
I've read a bit about it, like it's a good thing to use it when mixing (not a pro in the audio department) but, any chances you'd have some nice tutorials/readings about it?

As a sound newb one thing I find is leveling a project

Say its 10 mins I fear it might drift, especailly I find a listen through pretty intense so would tend to desire less punch at the end?

Would more experienced people maybe suggest I dunno putting the opening at the end of the timeline to check for 'drift'

Also simply on the FCP meters I tend to hit -6 and rarely go above that?

Maybe you can download the demo for the Massey and Waves plugs and do a side by side comparison and see how they sound to you. If I had known about the Massey plug-ins before Waves, I would've went with them. Same with DMGAudio.

I've A/B'd the stock PT compressor with the Waves Rcomp and C1, using the same settings across the board. I've consistently have gotten better, more transparent results with Rcomp. Less distortion and smoother to my ears.

What do you mean by "putting the opening at the end of timeline"? Are you talking about placing 2pops to check for drift? If so, it is common to place visual and audible pops 2 seconds prior to the first frame of action as well as 2 seconds after the last frame of action. This is pretty much a dummy proof way of checking for sync. I also place muted pops on every audio track.

You can go higher than -6dB but it depends where your mix is headed......
