GH2 Best Value for Body Only?

With the GH3 just around the corner now seems like as good a time as any to finally join the GH2 wagon.
I just came across this Ebay listing that offers a New Black GH2 Body Only with all accessories for ~$620USD.
It comes from what appears to be a reputable seller and since I don't own a GH2 I was considering purchasing one here.
That is the best deal I have seen to date for a GH2 so I was wondering if anyone have seen better.
$620 plus free shipping to the states is pretty hard to beat though, judging from the other sites I've seen.
What do you all think?

I'd be a little leery of something that cheap- I'd guess there's no warranty.

I am leery indeed lol hence my reason for creating this thread.
The only saving grace is that the seller is a reputable Ebay seller and there are more than 10 for sale.
I guess it makes sense that the price will come way way down like the GH1 did.

Yes, I would be careful too. Could be grey market. I live in NYC and there's a LOT of sheister electronic dealers in NY/NJ. The only ones I trust in metro area are B & H, Adorama and JR Computer world.

...wouldn't this actually be a bad time to join the GH2 bandwagon? On one hand, the GH3 might be a much better camera and you'll feel silly to be using a GH2. And even if it doesn't turn out to be as spectacular as we are hoping, the price of the GH2 both new and used will inevitably drop. So you're basically paying an unnecessary premium on a product that will be replaced shortly.

As a separate question: is there anything wrong with buying grey market products? I am not at all interested in a warranty. With the cost of custums and freighting combined shipping from JA to US and back is murder i tell you!

Ah so you recommend i wait further? Good point.
As for the GH2 vs GH3 I would prob prefer the newer model but the GH2 is still a fabulous camera so I'll take either one, as long as budget allows.
Plus with the hack readily available for the GH2 it will breathe new life long after the GH3 becomes available.

i pulled the trigger on one when it was listed at 486, too sweet a price to resist. according to fedex, its shipped out from NJ and in transit to my possession. It does not include a manufacture's warranty, but is warrantied by the vendor for 1 year, good enough for me, in fact i bought my old canon 550D under very similar circumstances. it worked great and im sure is continuing to do so in its new owner's kit, so i am not too worried about getting a lemon.

i'll let you guys know if its legit when it comes in

also how is now a bad time to invest in a GH2? at the very worst scenario, you get a good companion body to the GH3 (a B cam is always handy) AND you are able to get a feel for how micro four thirds cameras handle.

best scenario, the GH3 isnt released for quite some time and you get a great deal on what seems to be an excellent little camera.

If Panasonic introduces the GH3 at Photokina this Fall (as they did with the GH2), they are likely to be hard to find in the States until about a year from now.

That is a long time to wait for a camera that might or might not be worth waiting for.

My advice is to buy the GH2 for the best price you can get it from a reputable seller and start shooting and learning. When/if the GH3 gets here, you will be a better filmmaker, and you will have a body of work shot on a great little camera - a body of work that won't exist if you wait.

If you don't end up getting the $620 eBay camera, keep watching the used pages at places like Amazon or Adorama. Every once in a while they'll have a really good price.

Good luck with your decision,

Bill

Stop right there.

This is good advice. Also you might want to call the number they provide, because they state that it is camera in a factory sealed package yet it appears as if the lens that came with the camera has been removed. But they still supply the lens caps?

This is exactly how i bought my canon 550D, it was originally a kit with the 18-55 ef-s lens, but i only bought the body, but it shipped in the same box. Absolutely nothing was wrong with it and it served me very well before i sold it. What they really mean is the individual packaging of the items within the box have not been opened, but more than likely the box has been opened and the lens has been removed. i personally do not see a problem with this considering i scored a brand new body for nearly half price, though others might prefer to pay more for their body-only purchase to come in a body-only box. though i can see the no manufacture's warranty being an issue with most. also i doubt they include the caps and lens hood, but hey if i end up picking up a kit lens it'll be nice to have extras haha

One good story does not mean one should not be careful. I did not advise against the purchase, merely that a call sometimes help solidify a purchase decision. As someone mentioned earlier, there are quite a few shady dealers in the greater NY area (that includes parts of NJ).

Glad your camera worked out. However, if there are issues with the camera on purchase (and some GH2s do have them) then a manufacturer warranty is worth its weight in gold.

Of course, anyone that shoots with a gh2 once the gh3 is released will indeed feel silly. lmao. My guess is the terrible resolution on the gh2 is the specific sillyness factor.

I couldn't disagree more. If you can afford a little bit more to get one local, you may be better off.

Even if the gh3 is released, the gh2 will still most likely be better due to the hack, now once the gh3 hack is available, and if it's even able to be hacked, well. then we'll see. But in the meantime, grab yourself a gh2, and have some fun. it is amazing as you know:)

If you want the best price for a new GH2 body, go to the panasonic page on facebook and like it. It will then allow you access to their VIP store. New GH2 body direct from panasonic - $699.
