best system to watch and edit native 5d2

Thanks I'll check them out for reference, but I'm in West Java Indonesia, everything I get here is out of Jakarta.
Prices are cheap here as well so I think the i7 2.8 is in the budget. I have a lot of hard drives and memory cards around I can recycle, so all the money will go to the processor, mainboard, and VGA card.
I'm still open for any good suggestions while I shop around.
Thanks

The i5 750 is the truly killer enthusiast product. If you spend the extra money for i7, I highly reccommend going with the 920 as you get 4 cores with HT and triple channel memory (plus more pcie lanes which is key if you plan on adding an SDI card later). The 8 series i7 processors do not have as many options because the run on the same platform as i5. Once you spring for i7, it is not much more to get the x58 platform and the 920 which overclocks like hell.

You should consider getting new matching memory for your system if you don't already have a DDR3 kit. gskill makes some great value kits and I am sure you will get a recc for that at hardocp.

Not read through this thread so apologies if I am going over ground already discussed. . . . .

. . . . but just got my brand new 27" iMac (the i7 version / 8GB RAM) . . . not really done any decent tests but Quicktime has zero problems playing 8 (eight!!) full size HD/H.264 files at once (files straight from the 5D, no conversion) - !!! That's eight full size files playing all at once without glitches at all . . . and that is from the internal/system disc.

Pretty impressive stuff after coming from my old G5 that couldn't play a single 5D H.264 without stuttering - and that had the advantage of coming from a fast external drive over Firewire 800.

How much did that puppy set you back? I gotta say I've had a lot of failures over the years with PCs. They are cheap and great when they are 100%, but when they fail it's not a pretty sight. If I didn't need it for 3Dsmax I may have have a Mac by now. Viruses are really trouble no matter how hard you try they get in. Tonight I suddenly have a corrupt 500gig HD that won't open. All backed up files, but not a good thing and not the first time either.
I've been checking out the iMac for a while and look forward to seeing how yours works out. Off to a good start it seems. Keep us posted Lee.
Thanks

I wouldn't go with an imac unless you are sure you will never need any upgrades like SDi out with a kona card. I recc'd a system much earlier in this thread that would be better.

Around £1900.

Damn, sounds nasty, not had a virus (as far as I am aware) in 18 years of working in Macs and never used anti-virus software - maybe I have just been lucky ?

So far, so good ! It's stupid fast, the screen is ridiculously good, it makes my Cinema HD display look like a very cheap, low res, dull and soft monitor, it's shocking - one other thing I like about the new iMacs are that they are pretty much silent, I never knew my G5 made so much noise, but it's like a washing machine compared to the new iMacs !!!

can you edit and transcode on the timeline without stuttering though? I know everyone transcodes anyway but was just wondering. that machine sounds like a beast.

Not sure what you mean killacam ?

I am not much of an editor, I am more of a motion graphics person . . . so I tend to use After Effects - which seems to have zero problems with 5D's H.264s.

Are you using the 5D footage with After Effects? Whole new world.

it looks like the new imac 27's have a shitload of problems like flickering screen, yellowing and other smaller things. People are on there 3rd and 4th imac 27 quad core i7.

http://forums.macrumors.com/forumdisplay.php?f=91 <---link to all the problems imac 27 qc's are having

On a side note, i went to fry's today with 15 seconds of 5d2 footage and went to every mac there with the footage on my cf card and reader. Copied to the desktop and tried to play the footage. I could get the imac core duo 3.06ghz to play one stream back smooth but anything more than that it was choppy. I went over to the mac pro quad core 2.66 with 8 gb of ram and almost got 2 streams going. Not very impressed at all. Then i went to there crapola i7 pc systems and had many streams going before the people came over and told me you can't do that.

Now my question is, if I were to spec out the fastest i7 pc system. Where should I splurge and where should I save.

Ya know, you just have to wait around this site a little while till you get both sides of the story. My PC i7 with the 920 processor will be around a grand. Not much to risk since i need it anyway to back up my other PC. I shouldn't complain about my PC so much, it works 24 hours a day 7 days a week and keeps paying my bills. I guess for how much I abuse it, it deserves to quit on me now and then. I never drive a car without a spare tire, PC is the same.
Thanks for the heads up enginyr.

I said it a little while back, but I'll say it again. My Acer 8940G i7 laptop edits transcoded (Cineform) 5D footage great on Premiere Pro. Native footage plays back fine in Media Player, but doesn't edit well. I upgraded to a mobile workstation from my 3 year old quad core Q6600 and I'm loving the speed and mobility of the 8940G.

Well you can't beat that deal for the money these days.

Went over and did everything on my moms Imac 24" 2.4ghz with 1gb of ram. Took a while to import and create thumbnails in imovie but after that it was fine. Transitions were a tad ruf but toootally workable. No rendering needed.

I still can do transcodinig but I figured I'd start off right if I want to take photography and video seriously as a Profession, not just a hobby. To be profitable I need to have my workflow as fast as " I " am.

My i7 quad core imac arrives tomorrow. I still can run windows off of the mac too. Mac made everything so easy and intuitive. So long pc ;-p. It was nice knowing ya.

edit. I went before I bought the mac to test out an i7 quad core pc with 12gb or ram and it could "barely" handle 1 stream of 5d footage. That was priced for $2000. Imac with 3 year all parts and labor was $2300.

No brainer. Time to buy some apple stock.
