Any suggestions for best sony shotgun on a EX1R.
ECM-673,674,678. Should length of mic be a concern?
7,9, 10 inch long?
thanks, Claude

I'm very happy with my Sennheiser 416. But I haven't used anything else to compare it to so take it for what it's worth. Ah lawk it alawt.

Well, I have an EX-1, and of the three mics I use on it, my favorite by a long shot (pun intended) is a Sony ECM 680S Stereo http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/product-ECM680S/

Finally in the EX series for the first time, we have had a superb audio recording device in a camera not costing an absolute fortune - but you probably knew that! i am more than satisfied with the cited Sony (though many apparently look down their noses at any Sony mics compared to others on the market. Using a dead cat outdoors, and with the best audio settings on the camera, I just love the combo! I won't even say what my audio settings are, because even though I've been in audio engineering for 60 years, I am still tweaking, particularly with the auto level settings, which I also understand that many abhor. But given the relatively superb audio recording capabilities of this camera, the audio settings are crucial, no matter what mic you purchase! I commend to you one of my heros, Bass Pig, who has performed and published much related data in which you will be interested, and which you will be able to use in a very practical and productive way.

+1 on Basspig's audio info.

Might I add that no one mic is perfect for everything. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. If you are doing mostly one thing, say nature shots or weddings, you could pick one mic that is great for your needs.

However, for a variety of situations you might want more than one mic, or pick one of the well regarding mics and be aware that you might have to make some compromises.

In particular, I find what I want in an indoor mic to be a lot different than an outdoor mic. Also recording a group of people is different than one person out of a group.

Can any of you help me with my external mic settings on my EX1R? I have the Rode NTG-2 and the Sennheiser ew 100 G3 wireless mics, and the audio from both of them is very quiet and does not sound good, so I end up using the built in mics. I am using the external settings in the Sony Manual - do I also need to make a change in the internal menu? I suspect I am doing something wrong, but sometimes wonder if there could be a problem with the camera.
Thanks,
Bill

Hi,

I have a Rode NTG-3 and the audio is great. You may already know this but under the xlr input is a line/mic/mic 48khz switch and from memory the default is line which will give you really low audio. If you haven't already try changing that.

Thank you Miguel,

I think I tried all three settings, but I will try it again. Do you make any setting changes under the audio menu?

Bill

Billh, go into the audio menu and turn up the trim. Leave your external audio levels between 5 & 6 - no higher. Start at -41db and see how that works. Also turn your headphone volume on the camera all the way up.

Chad, I'm not sure about that last bit of advice. Headphone sensitivities vary quite a bit from brand to brand so I'm not sure you can make a blanket setting like that. Plus, most headphone amps in these cameras CAN get pretty noisy at full gain.

The Audio levels are what's important here. Beyond 6 (on the EX1) you are introducing hiss into the signal. The headphone amp doesn't affect what gets recorded. I was telling him to go all the way up with the cans level so he has a starting place. If everything is set like I suggested and it still sounds quiet, then there's a problem elsewhere. I don't really find the EX1 headphone amp to be noisy. So I was being EX1 specific as I use Sony 7506 with the level all the way up and it's still a tad quiet for me. I even have a radio shack booster for the headphone levels, though I've abandoned it. I'm used to the MixPre with all that clean gain....
