best shutter speed for film look?

I've heard of this too. If a 180 degree shutter is equal to 1/48, what is a 200 degree shutter equal to?

I've heard of DVX users shooting at 1/32, 1/36, and 1/42. Any comments? I don't think any of the HDV cameras let you have these choices but I think the HVX does.

Id agree that between 1/48 and 1/60 best for general shooting. I use 1/120th a fair bit in action shots, not as heavy as the saving private ryan look, but I like the crystal images.

John the Canon A1 is HDV and has the following shutter speeds.

60i/30f
1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/100, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000, 1/2000, 1/4000, 1/8000, 1/15000, CS (Clear Scan)

24f
1/3, 1/6, 1/12, 1/24, 1/48, 1/60, 1/100, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000, 1/2000, 1/4000, 1/8000, 1/15000, CS (Clear Scan)

The underlying relationship between shutter angle and shutter period is simple mathematics.

Shutter period = (1 / frame rate) x (shutter angle in degrees / 360)

or

(1 / 24 fps) x (200 / 360)

or

.042 x .556 = .023 seconds

.023 expressed as a fraction = 1/43.2

Shutter & DOF

Shutter & DOF

How will the shutters speeds impact depth of field? I'm assuming the less light that comes in (say at a higher shutter speed) the more I need to open my iris and the shallower depth of field I'll get. Is this correct?

Shutter speeds in themselves have no effect on DOF, only on relative motion blur. Your assumption of the secondary relationship is correct, the same can be accomplished with adding ND or reducing the amount of light that your subjects receive.

the closest you can get to "film look" is by using a few different shutters and knowing when to switch to them wisely :)

A lot of people including myself like the 200 degree shutter as opposed to 180.

I am using 1/43th for low light with good results. How high have you guys gone? Kohli was experimenting as low as 1/38th and said it wasn't too bad.
