FS5: Best Shoulder Rig for using a Monitor

Hey guys,

I shoot on an FS5 with an Odyssey, I want to put together a new shoulder rig, need some recommendations - I dont like monitoring through EVF, so I need a setup I can still use the Odyssey to monitor with.

Thanks

A couple of pieces you probably need are :
Rosette Grip set
Shoulder Plate
Articulating arm

Put your FS5 on the shoulder plate, put the monitor on the articulating arm with 15mm rod set, and use Rosette grip set to hold your camera.

If Odyssey is the monitor you're going with and you're not using the default EVF/monitor screen, then you're most likely going to end up with a setup that isn't properly balanced. The idea of shoulder rig is so that while the rig is sitting on your shoulder, the camera weight past your shoulder towards your back is a bit heavier than the front. You can either solve this problem by adding more counter weight to the back of your camera by buying a couple of these or put your Odyssey monitor by the camera body side or towards the back and use your normal EVF/monitor to view your shot.

I was considering buying an EVF that could take the video out from the Odyssey for shoulder shooting.

This is exactly how I do it; when I need to record on my Shogun Inferno I mount it at the back side of the camera, not in the front for the reason mentioned earlier (balance). I then use my Gratical Eye as an EVF. The rig (and I'm talking FS7) is quite heavy, it balances well on the shoulder; when I put it on the tripod of course I can monitor and not just record with the Shogun.

Anyway - putting a large (like 7") monitor in the front in order to be able to monitor with it is a bad idea; to nose heavy.

On the Fs5 the only way to go is the Odyssey because the smaller cam doesn’t have a second video out when shooting Raw. It’s too bad all of the decent EVFs cost more than the recorder. And then there’s power.

Sam, at least with FS7 "power" is your friend; in order to get RAW SDI I had to purchase the XDCA module and the V-mount batteries provide enough juice for the camera, EVF and Shogun. Plus, they balance the rig nicely on your shoulder... Of course with the FS5 you have to devise another way - but it's doable....
