Best Shotgun Mic?

I've been looking at the Rode NTG-3, but is there a better shotgun microphone (or any way to record audio) for the FS100? Thanks!

Maybe I am being grumpy here but have you bothered to visit the audio area of this board? The FS100 section which should be dedicated to people dealing with issues who have/own or rent the camera. If you want information on audio go to the audio section and talk to the folks there. They will probably tell you do do a search and read then ask some questions.

You can always find better, but for on-camera, it almost doesn't matter since it's never the optimal way to record useful audio for anything other than reference sound. I bet the audio guys will tell you to respect the boom op and hire someone for doing your sound.

Having said that... I have the NTG-3 for those odd jobs, like today, where a sound guy isn't an option either do to the nature of the job or the economy behind it. I think it's a decent mic for the price. I might suggest you to get a better camera mount than the one that comes with the FS100. It has no suspension what so ever and what ever click and handling you might do to the camera could be transfered to the mic.
I bought the Rycote 18 cm uni camera mount.

But indeed... do go by the audio forum and read the stickies along with your own research. There's no finished answer for this, other than telling people what price range you're working with. Fx. I would love to have the CMIT 5U, but some sound guy might keelhaul me for putting it on a camera ;P

Depends. Indoors with lots of lovely walls to add echo or outdoors with lot's of lovely background traffic noise?
I use a Sennheiser MKH416 outdoors no further than 4' from the subject assuming they have no noise behind them. Inside, any shotgun will sound hollow though the eng pros used the Sanken CS1 for a long time. In truth, I prefer to lav mic interview subjects, even a handheld omni is better than all the nasty refelctions you get from boom mics indoors.
For full on sets with crew, boom operator and blankets are the way to go. Oh, I also love the small handheld pcm recorders beacause you get decent audio with a lav going directly into one of those. I use an Olympus LS11.

Even though the board police have arrived I would like to say I have both a Rode NTG-3 and Sennheiser 416. 416 is better but at the price difference not THAT much better.

I'm about to go pick up the Sennheiser ME66/K6 from Rule this afternoon to pair with my FS100. Hoping it works well. I've heard great things about it for the price. Audio gear can get incredibly expensive, but this is my first shotgun mic so I didn't want to go over the top with my small budget. I'll be testing it out next week on a couple jobs and will let you know what I think.
