Best shotgun for 5d?

Looking to get a decent shotgun set up for my 5d. Pretty much just looking to record decent audio when shooting broll without getting any camera noises and as least hiss as possible.

I have already have a Audio Technica 897 shotgun. Would it be better to use a XLR>1/8 and run that in to the 5d, or into the 5d with magic lantern? Or would a rode mic be better?

How far is the talent away from the mic?.....
As a guide the mic MUST facing the mouth and be within touching range of the talent, if its further than that its to far away and should be regarded as un-useable.
Mounting a mic on a camera is the WORST place to put it.

Like I said, this is for broll not interviews. I'm not gonna have a boom guy with me for wedding preperations and things like that. Just capturing natural dialogue and natural ambient noise will hearing the least amount of AGC or hiss.

Is a normal shotgun just plugged into the audio in with XLR>1/8 the same as a rode mic? Or does the rode mic set up have a cleaner floor noise?

You need to work through the situation,
Does the mic you want to use need 'phantom power'? yes / no
(if yes) Does the unit you want to record onto have phantom power on it?
Is a full length shot gun mic to long and will it be difficult to handle?
Do you want to record mono or stereo?
The hiss / noise floor is normally determined by the quality of preamps in the recorder.

You mentioned comparing your AudioTechnica mic v Rode.... Which Rode mic model?

What's "broll", Oh! B-Roll! I thought you were referring to some sort of fish or vegetable.

While I've heard that the 5D MKiii has better audio than MKi and MKii, I haven't heard it yet. The audio quality of the earlier is sufficiently lacking so as to be unusable. Which do you have? Do you want mono or stereo?

I dont know of any mic mounting on a DSLR that will prevent handling and operating noise from being picked up by the mic unless you can operated the 5D without moving your hands.

A 'normal' shotgun has a balanced mono output. Your DSLR has an unbalanced stereo input on its 1/8 mic jack. A straight-through XLR>1/8 adapter does NOT have the proper wiring to connect the two together, you need a purpose-built cable to do that. Second issue - the DSLR does not supply phantom power to the mic - phantom and 'plug-in power' are two different things - and unless you choose a mic with a built-in battery supply (and only a minority of 'guns have 'em) you'll record nothing at all. Third issue - if you put the mic on your camera the noise of your hands working the controls, your breathing, all inches away from the mic will be as loud or louder than environmental noises any number of feet away from the mic. There's nothing magical about a shotgun that makes it deaf to close-by handling noises. It'll hear a voice 3 feet in front of the mic better than it will a similar voice 3 feet off to the side but it still hears both voices and that's a different situation from handling noise anyway.
