I read on bythom.com that it's best to set the sharpness on 0 when recording video with the Nikon D90. Does everyone agree with this? How do you add the sharpness back in if you do this?
i use 2. i haven't really tested it but i wanted to go as high as possible without seeing sharpening artifacts and that seemed right. the problem with adding sharpness to d90 footage in post, as i'd normally do, is that the compression artifacts get sharpened too, plus the image is so soft that a simple unsharp mask doesn't really help, the details are larger than the noise. warp sharpening at a low setting seems to be what works the best.
better to add noise and hide the artifacts rather than sharpen and make them more noticeable. Thanks to Nikon marketing you have to be on your game with sharp focusing and good glass.
that would be virtual dub. it's not an editor but it's quite good for pre/post processing including sharpening, adding and removing noise, basic color correction, and so on. then you can do the actual edit using whatever free tools, which i've no clue about.
