Best Settings for Green Screen?

Hey all,

Does anyone have recommended settings for greenscreen usage? I know mjpeg is popular, but I've also heard that the AVCHD works really well too (all assuming you have the hack, which I do). My only question is with bit rates, more specifically pertaining to AVCHD. Won't you still get crappy quality with hacked AVCHD if you're doing green screen since all you're shooting is essentially a big wall of green and some people moving around? Any tips on this?

Thanks!

Hey Tommy. I made these Web commercials a little while back. The video with the Red background is UNHACKED GH1 , and the other video is with the HACKED GH1(3)

Much more detail with the hacked gh1. But the unhacked still does a great job.

Those are pretty nice! I shot some stuff with the unhacked gh1 and it's not coming out real well. It might be the DOF interfering with the composite, I wish I could get something like your videos. Those are quite nice!

hey tommygdawg

recently shot a green screen music video, was my first attempt but managed to get a great result.

shoot with a high shutter speed (100 or higher) to minimise motion blur, keying software hates motion blur.
shoot with your lens aperture no faster than f3.5ish, again any blurry DOF edges will push the keying program around the bend.

i found the MJPEG far superior when shooting green screen stuff, AVCHD i found to be pretty poor (plus once i saw the fantastic key MJPEG did i was happy, shot at 30fps & confirmed to 25fps in premiere)

the MJPEG videos i shot had the Ptool MJPEG 4:2:2 colour sampling checkbox ticked, 4:2:2 works better than the standard 4:2:0, think i was running the lpowell 75Mbps Peak patch.

check out this link, half way down i posted an example of the music video, clean crisp colour key!

also incase your a After Effects & Premiere user i suggest using Premiere's UltraKeyer, rather than the After Effects KeyLight plugin, UltraKeyer is at least 10x as good!
have a read through the link i posted up, should help.

Thanks for the tips, terra. I wasn't even aware that Premiere had a good keying plugin! :P I wonder if this is an offshoot of that Adobe Ultra keying software...I'm not even sure if that's still around anymore. Anyway, very useful. Thanks!

I used Keylight in After Effects and I didn't have a problem with it.

You need good lighting. A well lit green screen will give you an excellent key.
