GH3 Best Settings for GH3 and other questions.

I'm going to film a feature length doc in about a month and would love to get an image with great dynamic range and as filmic as the GH3 will allow.

I would love for you guys to post what you believe are your best settings for the GH3. Settings that give you the best dynamic range for color correcting later.

Also, do you think that the cameraman should shoot the GH3 underexposed and then lift it in CC, or will it bring out too much noise?.
Shoot closer to overexposure and than bring it down in the CC? Or, shoot exposure as exact as you want it?

And finally, do you guys like the 50mb mode or the 72mb mode. I'm hearing rumblings that there is less noise in the 50mb mode.

Thanks for your time!

Experiment with Natural and Portrait with settings between -3 and -5. There's dynamic range, and then there's color fidelity, and you'll have to decide where you want to place your chips.

"Underexpose" is not the best way to approach this. Just don't blow out your highlights. Dynamic range is as much a function of the lighting you bring to your shot. This isn't Ansel Adams Zone Photography -- you can't quite "create" dynamic range in post easily. And yes -- lifting a tone curve to lighten a shot will certainly increase noise.

I prefer 50 over 72. Personal experimentation (so far) leads me to believe that in the 1080/24 mode I usually use there is no discernible quality difference.

Good luck!

Best range and color:

Natural
-4
-4
-1
-5

We always shoot 72mb/s in 24p even though many say there's no difference between that and 50. Why sacrafice the extra data when it may come in handy when you start pushing the image around in post? You're still talking about small file sizes compared to shooting on a BMCC or RED.
