Best Settings for Action Sports

Who's using the DVX100a to shot action sport videos? Which sports (Snowboarding, Skating, Surfing, etc..) and what setting are you using (24pa, 30p, 60i and shutter speeds)?

My footage will be primarily put on DVD and the web with the chance that it may end up TV. I've been shooting in 24pa, but the action sequences are not as clear as I would like them to be especially when slowed down.

Does it make sense to shoot the action shots in 60i and everything else in 24pa? And is that even possible on the same timeline (in premiere pro 1.5)?

i have been shooting snowboarding for 5 years....got to use the dvx a bunch this winter...i thought it was awesome...shot on F5 out of the box...it is a bit jerkier, obviously, but that is the "film look",.....didn't have any problems slowing it down either....

Re: Best Settings for Action Sports

I'm shooting cycling videos and have been using 30p and some 24pn. All for web/dvd at the moment.

I would recommend playing with the shutter speed setting to get a feel for how your action shots will look. I'll pump it up on the higher end for some of the fast shots. Also, if I am slowing down the shot I will want a faster shutter speed.

There's some good posts on this board that describe the best settings for slowing down footage. I don't have links to them so will have to do a search. Ah, at the top of this section (technical) is a sticky post about shutter speed.

As for mixing 60i and 24 pa footage in the same timeline, that's possible. Take a look in the Premiere section of this board. There's info about doing that in there.

Hey, well I was wondering does the limited zoom on the AGDVXA hamper your videos well not so much hamper but more like limit you, to what you can do?

Not with the videos I'm shooting. I'm normally taking shots up close and in the action. It's possible to add a telephoto adapter to get closer to subjects. I haven't done so and can't comment but others have here on the board. I think member "disjecta" has some info regarding this.

Re: Best Settings for Action Sports

I just made two 30 sec. sport TV advert. spots in 24p advance with the anamorphic lense.
It looks just "right" !

...shooting for slow motion playback on certain clips, then i would use 60i and slow them down in a 24p timeline.

60i looks good too, but it looks like...well...plain local BetaSP prod video...

You have to view the limited zoom (with an attached telephoto) the way you would a fixed prime lens. You need to have control over what type of shots you are getting and know that you cannot go wide. This is fine in a relatively controlled environment but if you are out there shooting sporting events, you never know what can happen and you might need to go wide to get all the coverage you need. It's simply not an option if you have a teleconverter attached.

Re: Best Settings for Action Sports

the best example are the NFLfilms shots of the ball in fullframe and then the lens opens up to show the widereciever catching the ball in the endzone. the focal length goes from 1000 - 30 in 3 seconds.
you cannot achieve that with any cam of this pricerange, not even the XL2.
we have one Betacamlens we rent that can do these things but this lens alone costs 20.000.
there are times when money is your limit....
