Best scene mode for oudoor sports

Hi Guys,
This is my first post as a DVX100 (PAL)owner. I have produced a couple of Fishing related DVD's and was wondering if 25p or 25p advanced will be suitable modes to film in (Going to DVD), when trying to catch fast jumping fish like sailfish and Marlin ie worried about focus time , strobing etc. I film in extremely high temps consistently over 100 degrees in summer and will not have time to set up scene's (Fish don't follow a script) I need to be able to basically switch the camera on and start filming.
I have both UV and polarising filters which do people prefer in the harsh enviroment of being on the water.

Frankly 50i would be better for reproducing action and for eliminating strobing and for focus response time... it wouldn't be filmlike, but it would solve all the other questions.

There is no "25p advanced" on the PAL DVX, so you don't have to even worry about that.

OZFISH Im an aussie in Japan atm I dont think you can get Barry's book there at the moment but you can do what I did and order it straight from the link under Barry's signature as I did.

I have the DVX100a (ntsc version) but I think you will find the pal version is covered enough to be a worthy purchase plus all the other great guides in there to using this cam.

Hey ozfish!!

Just order the book online - I got it in about a week or so, no probs. Most of the info applies to either PAL or NTSC, and for us lucky PAL people, there's a whole bunch of complicated stuff that we can just skip over.

For filming on the water, a polariser is great because it lets you see through the glare on the surface. Be careful if you are panning around a lot though, because the effect changes depending on your angle to the sun. If you can't use the polariser then a UV is a good filter to use for protecting your lens as well as removing a bit of haze in the atmosphere. Take both just in case. Good luck!!

Thanks guys,
I know I have lot to learn about the capabilities of this camera. You probably won't believe this, but I have been able to put out a DVD( Fishing the Rowley Shoals) nationally, filmed on a digital still camera with VGA cabability ie a Fuji S7000. So I would hope the next will be a little more professional. I have even made my money back!

Hi fritz,
I used the net searching for companies selling simular products, emailed and phoned them, sent copies of the DVD slick and finally got a distributor that sells to the tackle shops Australia wide. Major department stores are a lot harder to get into as they won't take you if you have only one product. So I'am hopeful of getting in through the back door as my distributor has multiple products they sell to these stores.
My advise for what its worth, is if you are passionate and persevere you will succeed, start small don't overcapitalise and target your market.

Thanks for the advice ozfish! I'm working on some stuff at the moment that I hope to be able to sell, so it's good to see someone out there having success with marketing and distribution.

This camera is fantastic, you're going to be so much happier with what you get from it than what you got from your digital stills camera.

Hi Fritz,
Hope you have success with your project. Since you are in Oz do you have any recommendations for a suitable Video light. I do a lot of night fishing for Barra and need something that will work in the confines of a small boat ie it does not have to throw the light very far. One problem I have noticed with flashlights and barra is the fish scales act like a mirror and throw a lot of light back . Not sure if it will be an issue on video.

Hi ozfish,

Sorry - I know next to nothing about lights...

Maybe have a look at this place: http://www.globalmediapro.com/do/category/cameralights

They are in Auckland, a kiwi guy on this forum put me onto them and I ordered a box of MQ tapes for about $3 less PER TAPE than the cheapest I could get in Australia. I don't know how good the tapes are yet because I had them delivered to my mother-in-law in Christchurch (I'm going over after xmas) but I do know that they arrived. Shipping is free if it's going to an address in NZ. Maybe you could do a NZ fishing DVD and pick up a light at the same time...claim the whole thing on tax...!
