Any advice on what kind of rig to get for gh4? I shoot mostly run and gun stuff as well as narrative short films and music videos, etc.

- Zacuto marauder if you shoot enough - long days, comfort a priority etc.

- Gorillapod if you don't like zacuto's price tag

- don't shoulder mount it - enjoy shooting with a tiny camera

To my knowledge the only system being used on multiple $100M+ movies shooting with the GH4 (and a few people on DVXUser) is the Hot Rod Cameras, Kung Fu Cinema System.

It's only available over the phone, email or in person from Hot Rod Cameras in Hollywood.

You can't see a final photo of it anywhere on-line, there's purposely no description of everything it can do (which is dozens of features beyond anything else available) and it will also set you back less than the high end systems at only $699.

Includes 18" uber-fleixible and rugged micro to standard HDMI cable w/the strongest and lowest profile cable clamp in existence, a positive locking cold shoe, spirit bubble level and you never, ever need to remove the camera to change a battery. The whole thing has a low-profile mount (with Arca Swiss option) for those who don't want the industry standard Arri 15mm lightweight rods.

It's also 100% compatible with the Sony A7-series and has the ability to support and lock on all the major Metabones MFT adapters. It is also compatible with the Aputure DEC wireless EF adapter, something that others are not. There's also an insanely cool new add-on part coming this November.

Of course I'm about as biased about this as you can get, but I'm also credited with "kicking off" the professional DSLR mount and accessory market 6-years ago, designed camera accessories for half a dozen other companies/competitors, and there's more Hot Rod Cameras PL mounts found professional rental facilities than any other company worldwide- so it's possible I might have some kind of understanding about this.

I've had a couple of different cages for my GH4s, but the Varavon one with rod riser is the one I settled on (I think it's version 1 of the cage).

Main reasons are compact size, quick release functionality for breaking it down to the minimum for packing & photo mode vs video mode, and full access to all ports plus freedom to swivel the GH4's monitor.

Our Panasonic GH4-4K Camera is fully rigged for studio use in a Came TV Camera Cage with Top Handle, Iris Rods, Follow Focus, and Juiced Link Microphone Pre Amp. It’s also equipped with a Small HD-DP4 EVF and an Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 Pro Zoom Lens.

My guess is no! If you have a 100 million dollar the last thing you grab is a 1500 dollar consumer camera. Maybe he was kidding :) lol but who knows.

Wooden Camera Rig.jpg

This is my new rig. It's a Wooden camera DSLR cage (small) I like it for a couple reasons

It's not built for one camera so if I move to a similar size camera it will also work but if I go bigger all I need is a taller 15mm rail.

I have full unobstructed access to the the controls on the right side of the camera. A lot of these cages are so tight around the camera you cant see or even get to the dials and shutter release.

The top plate has enough room on it for what I need. In this picture I have:
Zaucto Gratical on Wooden Camera EVF mount. Also have a SmallHD 502 with Rosette block so I can swap it out fast.
RodeLink Reciever
Rode VideoMic Pro
NATO rail with handle that attaches to the NATO rail. It has a cold shoe on it that the RodeLink is attached to.
Zacuto Z-Drive on the rails. Love this follow focus because it gets out of the way with small tight rigs like this. Have room to get to the zoom on the 24-105 lens.
I have a splitter (not shown) if i need to run both mics direct into the camera.

The rails are attached with dovetail. The base of the Camera Cage has a dovetail clamp so it's toolless. In fact none of the gear on the rig requires a tool to take off or attach. So far I'm pretty happy with it. I do have some SmallRig pieces like the handle and NATO rail. I like SmallRig. Good price and well made.
