Best recording setting for sd output via hdmi

Hi Barry (in case you read this): I just got your book over here in Germany - and reading your chapter on recording settings, I would like you to ask you the following (any other people's opinions are welcome, too :-) )

I record for a german TV station, broadcasting in PAL (sd) 16:9. To get my footage into their editing systems, I use the HDMI output of the HMC, convert it to SDI with a blackmagicdesign HDMI to SDI box. My idea was: can it cause troube, if I record in 1080i, as the sd output of the HDMI will be progressive? Should I prefer to use 720p50 (it's news style).

Thanks for your recommendations!

Sascha

Hi Sascha,

I would definitely use 720/50p if expecting to use the downconversion to SD. Progressive footage will downconvert much better than interlaced footage will.

Hi Barry

wow - you are a book incl individual, quick support ... wow :-))

Tried today. Yes, the picture really looks better. Yesterday I even had some jitter after converting from HDMI SD to SDI... was completly eliminated today. Thanks a lot!!!
