Best Prores flavor for long term storage and use

Hi

I film mostly in RAW through 7q (enough time for both shooting and) that later convert with basic adjustments to Prores in Da VInci Resolve. After basic I throw away RAW as it takes too much space.

This clips (of nature and wildlife subject) mostly don't get old so I will use them for a long time. What would be the best Prores flavor for this? I want the best quality, I could theoretically deliver to 4444hq, but does it makes sense, or I would just inflate file size with no real benefit in quality?

Thanks!

I've tried doing side by side comparisons and heavy grades between 4k Raw and the 4K Prores HQ out of the 7Q.
I honestly can't tell any difference between the 2 in a well balanced scene. My humble opinion would be that 422 HQ is plenty for storage.

The only scenario I would consider keeping 444 files is if there's a possibility of a re-edit down the line AND the shots require VFX work on them (For any VFX shots I would try Slimraw and just compress your RAW down and keep that for storage)
Or you're making a feature for cinema in which case the cost of buying a couple of hard drives to store the RAW is advisable and should be part of the budget anyway.

I guess just break down your requirements and delivery type and decide from there. And do some tests :)

I agree. My own tests indicate that storing RAW compressed by Slimraw takes LESS storage than ProRes 4444xq, and in some cases even less than ProRes 4444. No point converting compressed RAW to ProRes in order to save disc space.
