Best product released in 2014?

Dragon sensor gets my vote. Such a fantastic and misunderstood camera...
look at the box office: Hobbit, Night At The Museum, Exodus. A camera tha shot all these movies that is fairly affordable.
I just DP'ed 2nd unit for Ridley Scott's upcoming "The Martian" at NASA using a couple of Dragons, and the results are stunning...

Speaking of Arri65 and Phantom65

Here is a video from April, 2011 of the Phantom65.

Because of the obviously large sensor of the Phantom65, AbelCine in conjunction with Vision Research, developed a 3D system that had two smaller lenses which were both captured on half of the sensor, creating two-2k video streams!

There were shooting 3D with two lenses and one sensor! How crazy is that?

With a similar large scale, wide sensor, I wonder if Arri is looking into this! Would make for a great way to capture Arri quality 3D without needing to do the 'Hugo' Alexa 3D rig which was a monster! One of the main reasons you see Red being used almost exclusively on 3D productions. Their rigs are 1/3 the weight!

Eh, never mind about the IMAX rumor... Seems they simply bought the exact idea demonstrated in the 3D Phantom65 video I posted:

Seems the Digital IMAX 3D camera IS a rebranded Phantom65 with the afforementioned stereoscopic lens system shooting to one sensor.

Nope.

The IMAX camera is in fact two Phantom 65 Gold cameras mounted side by side, shooting with a pair of lenses to a pair of 65mm-sized 4K sensors. The camera system was specifically build from the ground up so that the two sensor heads could be placed as close to one another as possible. I was rather involved in the various Phantom 65 systems and know quite a bit about these marvelous cameras. Until the Alexa 65, the Phantom 65 Gold delivered the absolute finest digital cinema image of any camera I have ever scene, period. Simply gorgeous stuff and still amazing all these years after it was first developed. To put it in perspective, the Phantom 65 was a working, shooting camera at NAB the same year that RED had nothing more than a tent with a proof of concept. There are a few articles about the Phantom 65, the Z3D system, the IMAX system and such on the AbelCine blog and elsewhere. It's the camera platform that only a select few ever really knew about. Real rarified air stuff.

Amira's a great camera for sure. But, it's just another station wagon. It ticks all the boxes except one, price. I looked into buying one earlier this year, but the rate of return was too long. Remember, this is a camera trumpeted as offering Alexa quality for the owner operator. Well, as a director, who self-shoots I couldn't afford one. It's still a rental item for most people. I can buy six FS7s for the price of Amira. Is Amira six times better?

In picture quality, maybe not.

As a whole camera, designed to let me create my best work, absolutely yes.

My favourite product isn't so much the product itself as the sale that put one in my hands, the blackmagic pocket. The sale caused me to impulse buy and finally move on from the HVX. The pocket has completely changed things up for me, it directly lead to the contacts I made that finally got me connected to the kind of work I wanted to be doing. The HVX still comes out occasionally for the corporate work I've managed to generate with my dayjob employer but the pocket has lead to the kind of filmmaking that serves my soul.

You missed the part where I said this is THE FIRST YEAR that this has happened... :)

Haha, no I didn't. I was relating and relating strongly. I decided December last year that 2015 was going to be the year 2014 was supposed to be. To my surprise so far I am on course. I've had more work this year than last year already, just finished a 2 week stint I had to take off work from my dayjob and pretty much have my spare time booked out to March already with numerous other projects in discussion. And in 2015 earned more than I've spent so far, that's a first. Finally feeling like I'm not a pretender anymore and it seems you can learn 90% of the job in your bedroom and online if you work hard enough at it. Everyone is asking me where I came from and where I've been hiding and the answer is dvxuser.

The dragon in my opinion is the best camera for low to high budget films for 2014. With everything the camera has to offer and can do. It's hard to beat. Really makes you think what's next down the line.

Congrats, that's sounding really good.
And yes, dvxuser is a great place to hide, I learnt so much here.

Well Dragon was only allowed to be publicly tested by high profile REDusers around August of 2013. And beta cameras were given for Gone Girl, Exodus, transformers, the Knick and for some reason the new night of the museum. It wasn't until 2014, the camera got into the public hands, not just for early adopters but anyone.
