F5: Best practices for exposing slog3?

I found this community to be extremely helpful in the past, so I thought I'd ask for tips on exposing properly with slog3. I've never shot with an Alexa or something similar to a cineon curve so I'm not too familiar with this. Thanks in advance for the help!

Hello fellow Torontonian!

Any particular reason for slog3 over slog2?

My only tip is know where all the HG's or slogs map their middle grey values and "white" value. But to be honest now that firmware v3 is out and Sony brought us MLUT's you can add the corresponding MLUT for the gamma you are using and just work like "normal" in the regular 0-109% scale and call it a day.

Many will bark at this suggestion since for so long we have become use to working with the mapped bastardized values and the techies will always want to know exactly what levels are sitting where but its also nice to work on a full scale waveform monitor instead of only the bottom half because in the case of slog it is squashed down practically all below 60%.

Like Dennis says, turn on the LUT, put your middle gray at 50.

Toggle the LUT on and off via side menu to see where your highlights are really clipping, if you get curious.

I should add, there has been zero technical data on SLog3 released by Sony as of yet, and no official LUTs either.

So until that happens, we're all guessing where 18% gray is supposed to land when you're looking at it or scoping it native.

That said, somebody could reverse engineer where middle gray lands by using the camera, with both LUT on and off, and putting a scope on the output.

It's theorized to be 43-45% based on the cineon curve values, but "theorized" is exactly what it is at this point until that white paper comes out.

Nate - doesn't noise reduction turn off using slog3 or something to that effect? I'm not touching it with 10 foot pole. Especially if there is no IDT for it in Resolve. That and I'm finally getting a better hang of slog2... .
