Best possible quality DVD

For one of my film classes I have created some graphics work in After Effects, Vegas and used my DVX for footage as well. This is going to be projected on a movie-size screen and was wondering what the best possible settings were to author a DVD. For some reason, every time I use Vegas's DVDA, the resolution gets cut bigtime after converting to MPG. Is there a better burning program or method of getting higher res? Thanks!

I assume that everything is progressive in your timeline? Of so, you can create a 24 frame progressive MPEG2 file. Depending on the length of your program, you can get away with a CBR encode of about 8.2 Mb/s for about an hour. I don't use Vegas, but I thought it captured all the frames but onlyplayed back the native 24. Does the MPEG2 encode also remove these frames so they are not encoded? This would only reduce the amount of time you could put on a disc with reduntant fields. Also, the disc would not be progressive, but a 29.97 interlace with 2:3 pulldown.

You might also want to look at other compressers. Try TMPGE, they have a free version you can download. Give it an AVI file. I have been using the Main Concept encoder that comes with Sorenson Squeeze with very good success.

Thanks for the response Mike,
actually everything is in 30i or 60i since it's all sped up or slowed down footage. Also time isnt an issue since it's only about 2 minutes long.

I have the Mainconcept encoder. Should I use the defualt "DVD Architect Video Stream" and burn away? Will this give me the highest possible output?

I would make sure that the bit rate is somewhere between 7.8 and 8.2, I frame at 5 or 6 and try that.
