best portable hard drive to accompany 1DC???

Given the fact that shooting 4K on the 1DC requires a lot of hard drive space, I'm curious to know what others are using in terms of high speed high capacity portable hard drives.

Regarding the 1DC, the rugged 1TB Lacie Thunderbolt drive seems like an ideal companion for 4K workflow when traveling:

In terms of speed and space, are there better options? Or is the Lacie 1TB Thunderbolt the best there is right now when shooting and backing up 4K while traveling?

What options are there for storage that don't require a computer or laptop to read those CF cards? For my type of work way up in the mtns, the idea of having to drag along a laptop is just a little unsettling. Are there any direct card to drive devices available that are super light and packable?

Good question! I'd love to know that as well. A CF card to external hard drive solution would be great. But I don't know of any. The 1TB Lacie Thunderbolt is unfortunately 5400rpm. But being thunderbolt files should transfer quite fast. Lacie also makes a 256GB SSD hard drive, but being only 256GB, I'd assume you would need several. Or you could buy a bunch of KomputerBay CF cards that are far less expensive than their Sandisk and Lexar counterparts.

devices that can transfer data from cf or sd cards are bulky and still require power anyway, and are not that convenient. ultrabooks or macbook airs of various brands are lightweight, can fit into any bag, are energy efficient and will transfer the data much faster, and you can backup to more than one device at the same time.

as for the external hard-drives, the price of the rugged lacie hard-drive can get you 2 wd my-passport(USB3) and 2 hard-cases to protect the drive while traveling(one for storage, one for backup). if your not planning to be careful enough with the drive, no amount of engineering, protection or ruggedness is going to make it idiot proof.

You can buy 4 KomputerBay 128GB CF cards giving you 512GB for $920 from Amazon:

or get the 750GB NEXTO DI for $960:

A $40 difference for 238GB more space.

Does anyone know how long it takes to dump 128GB worth of 4K footage into the NEXTO DI device? If I'm on an interview shoot and it takes a very long time, then I'd probably go with 4 CF cards instead.

Hopefully someone will come out with a CF card to SATA bridge adapter so you can connect an SSD to the 1DC directly.

Because Canon has never had a dslr form factor that films 4k at 500mbps data rate before. 32 gig cards have always been more than sufficient for nearly anything when you're only getting 45mbps files :)

Cheers,
Pete

I'm using the WD MyPassport 2TB USB3 drives that get their power directly from the USB port. 2TB for about $145.

So CF card-->ProRes 422 onto MyPassport. The 4k ProRes becomes my master.

I can do a first cut directly from the USB disk on my MBPr with 4k files in a 4k project in FCPX. It's completely smooth for a single track rough cut.

Thanks very much Andreeonline. I just ordered the lacie thunderbolt before reading your feedback. Will go ahead and order the western digital 2TB instead.
