Best overall / universal GH1 hack settings?

Since I would imagine that the GH1 hack has been around for a while now, I was just wondering if someone could recommend their experience of the best overall settings for all purpose use (AVCHD, MJPEG, Day, Night, ect..) without affecting normal camera features? I'm using a class 10 SanDisk card.

Also, what does the "GOP" options do?

On the GH1, the highest reliable bitrate I was able to obtain while preserving 720p60 mode was the 75Mbps Peak Reliability Patch. However, the 24p FHD mode in that patch only works in interlaced mode, same as the unhacked firmware. If you want a progressive, Native 24p patch, along with 720p60 support, I'd recommend the Blackout-Powell Patch. You'll find links to these patches in my signature below.
 
When looking at the details for the patch it says that MJPEG can't playback on the camera? Is there a patch or optimal settings that you recommend that still allows for all normal camera functionality?
 
I believe the Reliable In-Camera Playback Patch was the last of my GH1 patches to support MJPEG playback. If you prefer, you could safely combine the MJPEG settings from that patch with the AVCHD settings from any of the other GH1 patches linked in my signature below.
 
lpowell, can i use your 100 Mbps Max Latitude Patch 720 - 50 ? Probably; this patch by your settings converting 720/50 to 720/25. How do I use, your settings by 720/50 ?
 
To switch between NTSC 30/60p and PAL 25/50p, use the VIDEO OUT option in the SETUP menu. Then turn the camera off and on again and reformat your SD card. Once you have the camera set up the way you like, you can save your complete setup in one of the three Custom slots.
 
Hi lpowell, I was wondering if I should start using your 75mbs patch instead of the Blackout-Powell's. I've been looking for an easy explanation about the convenience of native 24p but I just can't find it. Could you please help me with this? I just use my camera to shoot and create family and friends short videos which I usually upload to vimeo or show on my LCD TV. I use Vegas for the editing. Also, if I stick to deinterlaced settings (if I get this correctly) throughout the editing and rendering process, what would be the difference vs the native 24p video?
Forgive me if I'm completely lost in here.

The unhacked GH1 records 24p video in an interlaced 59.94i stream. This works fine for playing your video directly on an HDTV. If you want to edit your videos, it's more convenient to patch the GH1 to record in Native 24p, without interlacing. Two of my patches support Native 24p: the 55Mbps Blackout-Powell patch, and the 100Mbps Max Latitude Patch. In the Blackout-Powell patch, 720p modes record at 60fps, which is useful for slow motion. In the Max Latitude Patch, 720p modes record at 30fps, which produces very compact files and is useful for long takes.

thanks for the info. But what would be the "best" patch for 24p in FHD? I need to shoot a documentary at this resolution in 24p... Thanks!
 
If you're interested pnly in 1080p24 FHD mode, the Max Latitude Patch will produce the highest quality Native 24p recordings I've been able to achieve on the GH1.
 
thank you very much for your reply (and also for your great patches!). From your experience, do you think that some patches in Mjpg 720p 422 give better quality than the best in FHD, even when upscaled? I was wondering...
 
If you're shooting a green screen, the GH1 MJPEG 4:2:2 mode produces crisper color definition than the 4:2:0 AVCHD modes. For this purpose, I recommend using the 1536x864 MJPEG HD mode in the 75Mbps Peak Reliability Patch. That's the largest 4:2:2 frame size I was able to make work reliably on the GH1.

The other special case for MJPEG mode is for use with anamorphic adapters. For all other purposes, I'd recommend AVCHD.
 
Many thanks! I will try today, the thing is I don't remember which patch I put in the GH1. That was more than one year ago, I think it was the blackout.... so I may try the Max latitude now.
I hope you do as well for the GH3 if it's possible! ;)
 
Im back from my first day of shooting. The quality of the Max Latitude patch is great, however it is not stable enough and i got a few write error resulting in losing shots (I use Sandisk class 10 32gb cards). What I omitted to say was that the documentary was about wild animals so I am shooting, well, wild animals and they are in constant motion. And despite my good contact with animals they often don't do anything I ask them to. Low rates actors I tell you... It's already a difficult task to capture "good moments" so I need the camera to be up to the challenge when I need it. The patch failed on me on a few great shots unfortunately :( The lynx were not happy I didnt capture their great hunting performance.
Could you please give me advice on what I could change in the settings in Ptools so I have close quality but more stable?

Hey no need to be sorry, your work is great and those patches are amazing. It's my fault to have not been precise enough on the settings of my shooting. I'll go back this week-end to get those animals on video, but I was just wondering about the patch you tell me about. Isn't that interlaced footage in FHD? Wouldn't it be a problem to mix with shots in progressive? Or is that only the way it is recorded and once in editing software i can put it as progressive?
Also I just read a few of your posts regarding your patches, especially the one I used and got errors from, the Max Latitude. It seems if i lower the exposure I may have less problems? I'm stupid not to have thoroughly read that before, sorry!
