Best on Camera External LCD Monitor

What is the best on Camera External LCD Monitor. I really think it would help get better focus and color. Speaking of color, what is the best way to get good color. I know I can continually white balance, but I don't have control over whatever the camera decides.

White balance with a white or even a grey card... the HMC allows for 2 saved settings so you can setup your shots before hand. Marshall and SmallHD make good monitors... the liliput is a really good affordable monitor ($200)

MadHMC150, are those self powered? I'm really wanting a self powered HD LCD, though It may be a while due to the prices.

I use a smallHD DP1X and love it. That said, they have a smaller version coming with the same resolution that I WILL be upgrading too once they ship.

Mine runs off of batteries and they have worked GREAT!

Gladiator,

Auto white balance, is not usually preferred since it may change mid-shot and change the look of your color mid clip. White balance before each clip using a card, or auto white balance and lock it in so it won't change.

You can change the overall look of the color you capture using scene files. You can try to find a look you like with the scene files, or just shoot very neutral and add color and other visual effects while editing. There isn't a right or wrong to this. Scene file 1 is a very neutral setting, so you might start there if you want to change things in post. You can change the stock files to whatever you like, if those stock ones don't suit you. Barry Green's book about the 150 will describe how the different scene file parameters work and give you a better understanding about your cam. The panasonic website has a scene file white paper that is a good read also.

In order to make a significant improvement over the LCD flip out, you will probably need to spend near $1000 for anything decent with a power supply. Most anything for less will be standard def and not much better than the flipout, except larger. None of them can be used to accurately judge color.

What would you say about the V-LCD50-HDMI for on-camera field use?

I was thinking about getting that one.

It is standard def by the pixel count. The exposure feature is interesting, but I'm not sure it will do much for you that zebras or the built in wave form monitor wouldn't do. Maybe someone who has some hands on experience can comment.

I have the little Varizoom monitor for use on my crane. It is std def, and is just ok for focus, but is fine for framing. HD would be a huge improvement. Also, a remote monitor cannot display all the info that your view finder or flip out can, so it may be useful, but your mileage may vary. It would be really nice to get audio bars and zebras.

FWIW, I use this with the HMC40 and HPX
