Best Nikon Adapter

I have heard great things about mtf... Any opinions on the mtf nikon to micro 4/3 adapter? I like that it can have a rod support bolted right to it. That would really make things solid.

evsonline sent me this one when I bought my AF. I thought it would be junk as users speak so poorly of these chinese made "ebay" adapters. I don't have a Novoflex or Adaptamax to compare it to- but this generic adapter is very snug and tight. There is no play or flex in the adapter when twisitng the lens. It feels as solid as a native m4/3 mount to me. I have had cheap adapters before- my Canon FD to EOS was a POS. This one is actually very good. Infinity focus is good.

And I found on ebay a reseller who sells the exact same adapter under a different brand name:

I bought 4 of them and have no issue with any of them. I have one on each lens.

Problem with the cheap Chinese adapters that you see all over ebay is two-fold. One is the rear mount is quite often only anodized aluminum. Aluminum is soft and prone to wear. The anodizing compounds the problem as what appears to be a tight adapter when you buy it, becomes loose over time as the anodizing wears off (possibly causing other issues as the tolerances go further out on what is usually poor tolerances to begin with). The second problem is as the anodizing wears off, the material it produces has to go somewhere and that somewhere can be anywhere, including on your sensor or in your lens. The Chinese adapters should be okay if left on the camera, but I don't recommend them if you are constantly taking the adapter on and off.

Metabones produces a nice Nikon-M4/3 adapter that uses chromed brass mounts at both ends. Should be fine for on/off purposes. Mine is holding up well. They are under $100 out of HK and can be found on ebay. The Novoflex/MTF adapters look the nicest to me simply because they offer iris control on G glass. The Adaptimax does as well but I don't find the screw adjuster as elegant as the Novoflex/MTF control ring. None the less I have heard great things about Adaptimax and they look like they are built to last. Voigtlander appears to make a nice adapter too, though no G lens iris control so it would limit your options. I haven't seen a Voigtlander up close but they look similar to the Metabones and I'm not sure they would offer much more at almost twice the price. Just my two cents.

I would second the Metabones. All of my lenses have iris control so the lack of an iris ring/screw is not an issue. I found that my mount was a little off (on 'thin' side) so the removable chromed brass rear mount allowed me to add a shim to bring focus back to perfect.

If all of your lenses, like mine, have apertures - then the best adapter I can recommend is the Voigtlander; I compared it to the Novoflex, and it was tighter fitting, with seemingly better build quality and finer tolerances. I returned the Novoflex and kept the Voigtlander.

Just like to say that due to Adaptimax's re-organisation within the group of companies owned by us, we can now offer all our adaptors minus the VAT. So if you are in the EU and are not VAT registered, our adapters are now 20% cheaper than last week. If you are VAT registered it will make no difference.

As for the thumbscrew to adjust aperture, it works a treat and is extremely precise. You can tweak the iris by a fraction of a stop no problem at all. And no, we are not cheap, but you get what you pay for, and a pro can't mess around hoping a cheap Chinese adapter will work when he can come to Adaptimax and we guarentee it will.

I agree, the Voigtlander adapter is pretty slick. I just purchased one, a couple Nikon mount lenses w. f-stop rings, and an AF100. It's all working together perfectly.

I now have both the Voigtlander and Novoflex and they are both very well machined and have ZERO play. The only "cheap" adapter that has come close to this, for me, has been the Ciecio7 adapters... and he doesn't make Nikon adapters anymore, as far as I can tell.

Don't get me wrong - the Novoflex was pretty good; the Voigtlander was just a bit tighter/better fitting (at least in my samples). I also didn't need the aperture control, so I saved some money by returning it and going with the Voigtlander.

Heads up - Warning: What ever adapter you use...do a THOROUGH check that there is no light leakage.

Do not ask me how I know! (But it is possible and its a shot wrecker if it goes un noticed and un rectified.)

Here is one way you can check.

Put the lens cap on with the camera turned on. ....Aim and move a light (eg 600 w spot light) all round while pointing at the lens and adapter (all angles.)

I have purchased both the Voigtlander and the Novoflex for our rig and find both units to be extremely well built and funtional. The Voigtlander is obviously just a well put together hunk of metal with little functionality but when it comes to adding and removing lenses you can "feel" the quality. With the Novoflex I find it a little trickier to attach as the release pin is kind of small but the dial to adjust aperture is extremely smooth. I only wish it had a little more travel.

So has anyone used both the Novoflex and the Adaptimax? If so how do they compare directly? Specifically the aperture control...do they travel they same distance on the iris?

Slightly off-topic...but I'm looking for a good Follow Focus for Nikon lenses - any recommendations from you Nikon glass users?
