Best Mic for Mark iii / 7D ?

Hi I'm looking for a solid versatile mic with a good reputation, that will work with DSLR cameras, specifically the Mark iii and the 7D. Something that will work well outside in the field as well as indoors. Budget in the $500-1200 range. Any recommendations?

This is a bit open-ended of a question. A little more information would be helpful:

1) What, exactly, are you planning to do with this mic? Dialog? Ambient sounds? Music?
2) Where, exactly, do you plan to have this mic? On-camera? On a boom? Clipped to the talent?
3) Do you have a dedicated sound person to work with you, or is it just you?

And just FYI, the 7D is a terrible choice for recording audio. The AGC cannot be disabled, and I don't believe the Sescom USB>headphone cable will do you any good without Magic Lantern (which cannot be installed on a 7D).

First reports of the 5DmkIII show vastly improved audio design, with a dedicated headphone out as well as defeatable AGC and manual input level controls (even in record mode). But do a search of the forums... you'll find plenty of discussion on the (few) merits and (many) pitfalls of recording in-camera with a DSLR.
 
Ok, yeah I hear you. Sorry, I don't know much about the cameras myself, was posting this on behalf of a friend, let me find that stuff out and update the post.
