Best mic 500$ and under

im ipcking up the at4053a, so ill post some tests when i can, to show you all how it stands. although i have really nothing to compare it to so... bleh

I had an ME64, 66 and 67 and sold them all. I was not all that impressed with the Sennheiser mics. I found the sound to be a little thin on video work and the side rejection indoors was not good. I'm with you on the AT815B. I'm looking to pick one up as well and, so far, the reviews are very good. B&H is selling them for the best price at $269. Happy Holidays.

I have used a shotgun in many situations and have found that for interviews, I seem to get better sound when I put it below the talent. I put it as close as possible and just out of site right in front of the talent and point it at their forehead. I have found that to work well. I have also used this set up with 2 talents, but with more than two I prefer to use the mic overhead on a boom.

Just to be clear, the ME series of mics from Sennheiser are not representative of the rest of their line of mics. The ME series are all crap for the price. Plain and simple. On the other hand, the MKH series (416, 40-70, 816, etc.) are all excellent mics (subject to personal opinion/hearing). The 416 has been an industry standard for many years and can be found in almost every mixer's bag of tricks.

BTW, you can pick up a used 416 for a very reasonable price, especially if you're willing to go T-powered instead of P48. I got mine for $450 including a visit to Sennheiser for a check up.
