best lenses for filming with Nikon D90???

I just got the D90 + kit lens i want to buy a 50mm prime is there a world of difference between the 1.4 and 1.8? i Know theres lots of debate on it for still users but what do the video users think? Im on a budget cause i just spent all my $$$ on the camera.

a lens is a lens, if it performs well for stills it does for video too. the 50/1.8 is sharper at f/1.8 than the f/1.4, but the latter is 2/3 stops brighter if sharpness isn't your main concern.

i have a nikkor 35/2 too and I've found it less than sharp, looks more like a cheap lens or a zoom, not the high quality prime it's supposed to be. i guess i need the 35/1.4 instead, but the f/2's are great in all the other lengths...

Very true. But still, mine works for me. And I didn't have the cash to shell for a 24/2 witch sounds very nice. It's a useful lens, maybe not for professional photo work... I'm sure it's sharp enough for the D90's video mode, though...

Is the price of a 28mm f/1.4 worth getting over the choice of several wider lens (20mm and 17-35mm) but at f/2.8?

I have a 28mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4, and the kit lens 18-105mm f3.5-5.6

But I want something wider and faster. This is mostly because I want the option to shoot extreme low light indoors and night-time. The Nikon 18-105mm is too grainy at 3.5. The 28mm 2.8 is OK though a tolerable grainy.

Anyone got experience with adding cheap wide angle adapters to their lens threads??

I'm not aware of the existence of any 28mm f/1.4 manual lenses. The fastest beng the nikon f/2. But correct me if I'm wrong. I'd love an f/1.4 28mm but if it does exist I bet I'd have to sell a kidney to pay for it. The Nikon 35mm f/1.4 is the widest f/1.4 I know of. Not really wide though on a DSLR.

You have to remember the crop factor....the 50mm 1.8 and 1.4 (I own both, dont ask) are actually a 75mm lens with DSLR.....Its almost a tele.

I too want a wide angle fast lens....so far the BEST Wide Angle out there I feel is the fast Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 or the slower Tokina/Nikon 12-24mm f4...

All 3 are great great lenses....the Tokina 12-24 is a steal at the price and you can find little difference between the two.

But if your spending money and want the sharpest wide angle for Nikon the Tokina 11-16mm is ideal. GOOD LUCK finding it. It is backordered everywhere and Ebay has them list at well over retail (sorry, i rather wait if i was buying)

I find myself using my 50mm 1.8D more than the manual 50mm 1.4. I also use the kit (18-105mm) lens less and less now, bummer...

Not a fully manual, http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/2814af.htm I've seen them for £800 around shops here. But with all this extra cash on getting fast wide lenses, damn... it makes me think I should have got the more sensitive Canon 5D and been happy with full frame on lenses.

Ah the 12-24mm f/4.0 is slower than the kit lens at 18mm f/3.5
How come you find yourself using the manual 50mm 1.4 less than the 1.8?

Thanks for the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 recommendation, although £500 for my casual habits seem abit much :zombie_smiley:

I feel like I get sharper images from the 1.8.....Although the manual allows me full flexibility to set aperture and keep the shutter at 1/60 and the ISO perfect at 200 while getting the lens WIDE open...

I rarely use it at 1.4 its just too open for when I shoot. Now I did slap a ND4 on there with the 1.4 wide open and its PERFECT it really is..

But I use my 50 1.8 for mainly portrait and stills of my family and etc...I get better stills with the 1.8 so I feel comfortable with it more and the video seems sharper and not as bad noise...

it could be all in my head BUT i prefer the 1.8 (still manually lock the exposure my self and get the ISO to 200 and shutter at 1/60 fine)

So I am going to keep both for now....I am just not an expert at measuring so the 50 1.4 is only good for Video and not Stills which I do more of...

hope that helps....(oh btw - my 18-105mm at 75mm is far behind the prime 50mm 1.8 at f8) remember the 50mm is actually 75mm on D90....so it make me feel better using primes for video although it may or may not be the case
