Best inexpensive sound for the DVX100A

Hello all,

I am recording segments for the web of me addressing the camera (my DVX10A).

I will be standing prob. about 3-10 feet from the camera.

What is the most inexpensive way to get good sound.

I've been thinking of ordering the Audio Technica at803b wired lavaier from B & H for $130.

Any tips about using this mic, or alternate suggestions for sound would be appreciated.

Be well,
Chill Will

Hi Chill Will,

Welcome to DVXuser! I saw this and some other postings about your planned web items/show. The questions you are asking are not so easy to answer, as you ask for 'the best'. One thing you'll learn from this forum once reading through all the interesting things you've found searching and just clicking away, is that the 'best' thing hardly ever gets mentioned. Instead you'll read a lot of 'everything depends on your budget/ambition/experience/willingness/andsoforth'. There are several topics on this forum that can help you determine what you think is the best (mic/setting/etc.) for your project or 'way you want to work'.

Personaly I have no clue what to use as a mic in your situation. I own a Rode NTG2 and would most likely be using that on a b(r)oom. But that's because I have that in my gear.

Read around, learn, have fun, ask more specific questions and you'll get more specific answers.

Regards,
Jasper

wired lav is the best solution for this situation. I'm not an audio guy so I don't know what kind is the best, but your on the right track. Make sure to get a 25' cable to go with it as the mic will only come with a body pack to clip on your belt, unless you already have xlr cable.

As for tips. clip the body pack to the back of your pants and run the mic lead inside your shirt and clip on just above your heart, between the second and third buttons down from your collar. Wear a button down shirt, clipping to a tee-shirt just looks wrong.

If you were to use a shotgun you'd need a boom stand to get it positioned out of frame, if you're working by yourself it would be more trouble than it is worth.

Lav in general is good for interview stuff, however the question is how good a lav. mic you can get for 130 bucks. You might get a better sounding shotgun for that money.
I'm using Sennheiser G3 wireless setup, while a lot more than 130$, it's worth every penny.
Why not buy something really good and sell it after the job is done? Cheaper than renting!
