Best In-camera Settings For Film Festivals

Hi everyone...I'm a newbie shooting a feature in 2 weeks. I know this has been beaten to death, but just a quick recap...what are the best settings for probable projection at film festivals? I'm planning on shooting 4:3 letterbox (for possible uprezzing) and in cine-like gamma 24p mode. Any advice would be helpful.:)

sounds like you'll get into a ton of festivals...

Dude...Chill out. When someone needs help, encouragement is most likely called for or constructive criticism, but you were just plain mean. The spirit of these boards is to encourage people to learn how to become film makers, not to snipe them because you disagree with their methods. If you disagree with someone, then help them grow from the issue.

If you are going to DVD, I would reccmmend shooting Scene file 5 and then re-introducing a pulldown when you export to the DVD. I would just have you scene file settings stock, and then lower Master Ped to about -7. This is just my opinion though. I think it is cool you are attempting a big project instead of just talking about it. Win or lose, you will learn alot! :) If going to film then see the below post.

'thefox' - i am the director...i have a dp. i'm the type who likes to know something about what's going on around me.

everyone else...thanks for your input.

A little heavy handed but I can see where the sentiment comes from.....

Reply to original: this subjest has been beaten to death, so if you use search there will be many responses to look through to give you plenty of info.

yes, i acknowledge this subject has been beaten to death...but what i cannot glean from any of the threads is this - if you do not know if you are going straight to dvd and could possibly have a film screening, then what is the best possible way to preserve resolution for both? i have shot on many different mediums but this is my first time with the dvx100a.

All those who have helped: your hearts are kinder than mine--and I don't give a shi*.

I'm done on this thread.

Straight up! People need to read the farking manual! A good smack on the head is good for people!

man, sorry i asked for a little real world experience out there instead of something from a manual. i'm done here too...good luck to all of you.

Dont let an @sshole taint your whole view of this site and these forums. Fox is an @ss. That's just the way it is and he's just one guy.

And no, the manual wont answer your question, it will just explain what the buttons do. Barry's DVX book will help you with regards to the question, but it doesnt come with every cam that is bought and the ones it comes with often take time before the operator/owner gets the book.

That said.... where's my F*ing Barry Book..... I cant find it.

Anyway, I'll try to help.

You want for theater projection and for DVD. I haven't answered until now, but @ssholes piss me off so I'll give my 2 cents. I am by no means an expert, but WTF.

I'd shoot letterboxed for possible uprez (instantHD, Photoshop or whatever) and 24pA. I personally dont understand why one would choose 24P over 24pA, and even Barry himself has said it doesnt really matter - although he will suggest one over the other for various situations - so since the pulldown of 24pA results in a better 24 frames, I choose that.

As for CineGamma and all the rest.... beats the F out of me. Here is an interesting thread that might help. Or not. But at least some more info for you to digest. Get the Barry Book if you dont have it. It will help alot but it isnt a miracle cure. If you need a copy, I have 2 sets - books w/ dvd unopened. Make me an offer. It will be cheaper than buying new. I also have 2 unopened Magic Bullets if you want one two. I sold one full price so I'm not shy of holding on to the two I have if I find someone else willing to pay full price, but I will let one go at a significant discount if you want one.

Just pray every night that God will give you Fox's omniscient wisdom. I do.

Good luck, and read around the forums a bit. There's alot of info. If you dont find what you want/need, then post and ask. Just remember there is an equal percentage of @ssholes in here as in the real world.

In that case I would shoot for a film ouput. These settings should be fine on DVD.

The manual does not hold this information.

if you have time to do this, you should record with a master ped of 0 or even + 2 with cinelike D on for dynamic range. This will give you the most lattitude of light, and even more control over the blacks and pedestal in post.
