best hvx200/macbook pro set-up

What would be the ideal capture/transfer set-up using a 17" MacBook pro? Record to p2? FS-100? Straight to the laptop? I plan on doing all my editing on the laptop. Help guide me in setting up the best system I can. Thanks.

It depends on the type of shoot.

Tethering the HVX200 to the laptop on a mobile shoot obviously won't work very well.

What do you intend

I just checked the specs on the new MacBook and it appears that they have dumped PCMCIA from the architecture in favour of a newer architecture called ExpressCard. This means that the MacBooks no longer natively support the P2 cards, so using FireWire is your only option now.

The other thing is that the MacBooks' stock HD is 5400 RPM. I seem to recall hearing that 7200 is needed to capture on the fly... any truth to that?

Ive been shooting for the past 2 weeks, and capturing directly to the 100gb 5400rpm HDD in my MBP 2.0ghz 15inch without a problem.

We have captured multiple times , 10+ minutes of 1080 60i out in the field , hostile field mind you, without a single dropped frame! *knocks on wood*

7200rpm might be a myth :)

If you look at the internal and "bus" Xfer rates on lots of 2.5" drives it is insanely high even at 5400rpm. I'm bassa try buying a couple of those cutsie rubbery lacie bus powere FW800 mobile drives and see what I get. They are espeeensive but the OWC ones are chincy and I haven't found any other manufacturer that makes well designed rubber or silicone padded cases.

Oh btw "insanely high" means over 45MB per second, and 100Mbits is 12.5MB per second, so you have puhlleeenty of room

Hmm, so there isn't a way to offload from P2 cards into a MacBook? If there is an adapter that can read the cards, I was thinking; why not purchase a $1100 MacBook for offloading over the P2 Store? It's fairly small and would also allow editing and previewing on set.

What I will probably be doing (I don't have the MBP yet) is shoot to P2. When the cards are full I will hook the camera up to the MBP with Firewire and transfer to the MBP hard drive or an external hard drive that is connected to the MBP. Once I've confirmed the files have been transferred correctly (play them in FCP or possibly P2 Log) I will change the MXF file attributes to READ ONLY (so they don't get deleted) and format the P2 cards in the camera. Continue shooting and repeat. I haven't tested the workflow yet, but I think it should work.

I will also use the MBP connected to the camera via Firewire whenever possible to check focus in the Log & Capture screen (you can make the viewer window much larger than default). I haven't field tested this yet, but I think it should work okay for us. We are testing the workflow in a few weeks before our shoot in August.
