Best HVX Package

I am a DVX/Vegas user and am interested in jumping into the HVX.....was wondering opinions on the best choice of P2 storage.......4gig vs 8gig......if the 60gig p2store is worth it.......wondering the best package. I expect p2 to get better/cheaper in the next year or so, and could get by with 2 4 gig cards.....but wondering if the 8 gigs are worth it at this time..........

Also wondering about Vegas and its future capability to handle the .mxf files

anyone??

Loaded question, with many trajectories.

1. Get no P2, record to laptop or other devise (Cineporter or firestore). As better solutions arise and get cheaper (Cineporter or firestore or larger P2), pick em up.

2. Get one P2 (with a nice Package deal, at AVS or Full Compass, but wait forever) and stop recording--force talent to take a rest--like the film days.
2.1. Laptop version
2.2. p2store version.

3. Get two P2s--4 gig and swap alot--one tech downloading while you film.

4. Get two P2s--8 gig and swap a bit less. Price has come down already to 4 gig proportions, but still high considering future price drops.

I opted for two 4 gig P2 with a laptop (theoretically, since I have not yet received it)--develop the workflow, but didn't break the bank. Well, it did break the bank, but I got all the money out!

I don't know where people get this idea, but shooting film, you do NEVER take a break when you run out of film, you just change mags. If a second AC let the film run out without having a new mag ready he's out for some serious trouble, if not loose his/her job.

So, for a film-like approach, two 8 gig cards or 3 4 gig cards seem more appropriate.

But I agree with everything else you said. And with what you did. P2 is still too expensive and small to be a great solution, so whatever path you choose now, make it cheap and know it won't be permanent.

I was thinking the laptop solution would be the way to go until we got the camera w/2 8 Gig P2 cards. Shooting at 1080/30P, I'm getting 17 min. using both cards (at least that's what the camera readout says.)

Like many others in this forum have said, once you start using the P2s you'll be hooked. There's nothing like using the thumbnails to search and play back the footage for the client, instantly! OR playback slowmo footage right on the set!

I found working with the laptop very cumbersome for most of what I do. But if I were shooting interviews and didn't have to move around a lot the laptop might be the way to go.

I'll be going for the Cineporter. And preferably the 240 GB one. That'll give about 10 hours in 720p continuous shooting. No hassle changing cards or dumping data. It's cheaper than the 3 8GB P2 cards, gives 10 times the storage capacity, is less cumbersome and easier to use than a laptop. You just come home plug it into your computer and transfer the lot in one go. You have your dinner while it's transferring and after that you're ready to edit!

Look, it would be best to get at least ONE P2 card no matter what you do. Buy one 8gb if you want, or get one 4gb. It's not that you would be recording straight to the P2 all the time, but you would at least have the option. Since I've already got a laptop and I'm not really all that "run and gun"-kind of filmmaker, I can live with the laptop tethered to external HDD's and worry about P2 later down the road.

It depends on the workflow you want. You'll need a laptop or something anyway to download the P2 cards to and I would love to have that film-like workflow because that will ultimately be what we'll be filming on in the future. But, I don't want to spend too much right now on it because I'll be putting that P2 money into anamorphic/wide/telephoto adapters, maybe an Andromeda mod if they ever make it, a pro matte box, a 35mm adapter, a pro tripod, lighting, new Macintosh hardware jump, software, and sound stuff.

Just think about all the other stuff you may need before blowing all your money on the camera alone.

You're right. There's much more to spend the money on than 8GB cards right now. Don't get me wrong. P2 cards are, or rather will be, fantastic at capacities of 32 GB and when they cost a few hundred euro.
I'd love to go out for a shoot with 10 32-gb cards and am looking forward to doing it as soon as it's possible (2 years from now?)
But for the moment it'll have to be Cineporter for purely practical reasons, especially since I shoot music gigs not fiction so I cannot be transferring data all the time.

Any guess on how much/when the FS100 firestore will be available? The Cineporter 100 gig looks pricey........I shoot alot of glidecam stuff, so I need it to be relativly light and mobile.......

The Cineporter does sound pricey (the 100 GB is at over $2000) but on one of the forums here a representative said we "would be pleasantly surprised" at the prices of the higher capacity disks (or words to that effect).

I'm thinking between 3000 and 3500 for the 240 GB. But that's just my own pure guess. I only wish they'd hurry up and get it out.

Very intuitive, things are where you look for them, loaded with all the tools I use, and you gotta love legalized prostitution!
