Best headphones for DVX100A

Yes, there is also an echo (at least on the dvx100). But that is a separate issue.

There IS a hiss in the headphone circuit. It is still adequate for many uses, but for pro-level productions running audio feeds from and to a mixer it becomes very apparent and aggravating to the dedicated soundguy.

The DVX is a great camera, and very good audio is possible with it. But from pro standards, it is sub-par in the headphone monitoring circuit and in the metering. Quality sound is all about signal to noise ratios, and the dvx100 isn't perfect in this respect.

Of course for the price, the DVX is still the best DV value out there by far.

For a low cost, very useful isolating headphone, try the Direct Sound "Extreme Isolation" headphones. A little bass-y, but they really keep the noise out, which means you can hear more without cranking up the headphone level. Of course, HN-7506 headphones are much better - they are helicopter-pilot earphones with the electronics of a Sony 7506 - great isolation and great sound, but pricier.

These are PASSIVE isolators. Active isolation headphones (Bose, etc.) don't really do what you want. But isolation is essential, especially when you have to operate fairly close to your source!

Filmjunkie - dude, who mistakes echo for hiss? I mean, they are pretty different things. And the camera exhibits a delay, not an echo, when shooting in 24P mode.

the echo might happen with emptiness of some one head :-)
this is idiotic delay on audio processing while the signal go a to d and back to analog and since your headphones are not isolating enouth mixing with penetrating sound from the outside .this problem is solved in the B version of the 100 .
dont know if they did something with the headphone amp it self since every 30$ walkman have one much better .

Another option for a good pair of headphones are the Sennheiser PX100 (EVS has them, as does B&H, about $40 to $50).
Small, foldable and nice sounding, albeit NOT "closed ear". I used them on a recent shoot with the DVX and was very satisfied with them. Could also be a "spare" pair, since they pack relatively small and are very light-weight, but still offer good sound.

Cheers

i have found that if you use a headphone amp off of the rca jacks you can get a somewhat better quality sound but you can also avoid the delay you get when shooting in 24p.

i use this for the return on my sound device 302 mixer. you run rca cables from the rca out's to the headphone amp and then a long headphone cable to the return input on the sd 302.

its a tiny bit noisy but i think that is from the sub-par quality headphone cable i'm using.

i guess i could use a long shielded rca cable but the return is just used to make sure that the sound is getting from the sd-302 to the dvx at the proper level.

So are you saying that looking for pro headphones is not necessary with the DVX100B?
