Best HD export in Avid

I am a very much a novice when it comes to Avid. But I'm one of those people that likes to figure things out by myself...untill I get stuck. Well I'm stuck...
I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to export my HD material in Avid, so that I can have a good version for DVD. My friend Geoff_R, says that .m2v would be the best file, but I don't see that export option.

Please help!!

Export from Avid as a Quicktime Reference file, then load that file into a third party compressor (like Sorenson Squeeze for example) and encode to MPEG-2 in the compressor, not in Avid.

If that's not enough information, let me know.

Krestofre, thanks for the reply. Quick question: What settings do I use for the Quicktime Reference?

Depends on what encoder you'll eventually be using. The "Digital Mastering" Defaults are a good starting place. The only thing you might have to change is 601/709 color levels or RGB color levels, again depending on what encoder you have.

When I tried, it gave me a .mov file that was about 20kb, which doesn't sound right. And when I put it in Squeeze, it said that it doesn't recognize the format.

20 KB is correct. Quicktime Reference files just point to the original media that Avid reads, thereby saving you a compression generation.

The recognize format issue is a problem though. If you just double-click on the .mov file will it open in Quicktime Player?

Well, my RealPlayer is set to play .mov files...but when it does open, everything is all white.

I'm not sure what could be causing that. Another option would be to export as a Quicktime Movie and make sure that "same as source" is checked. This will require significantly more hard drive space than a Quicktime Reference file, but it might get you encoding faster than figuring out why Reference files aren't working on your computer.

Try viewing your QT Ref file in the QuickTime Viewer. Is it all white there as well? If so, delete the file and re-export it with the "Use Avid DV Codec" option enabled. More often than not, that is the problem.
