Hey guys,
Writing to everyone from Casper, WY to try and film the total eclipse on Monday - and could really use some last minute help! I've got my new (used) FS7 here and I'm trying to figure out if anyone has any suggestions per settings for filming it (both during the partial and total phases). I've got the solar filter all set up an did a dry run yesterday, with importing into FCPX. Initial results look pretty good; it's not the detail that I've seen with the moon, but the sunspots are definitely there.
The key questions on my mind are:
* Am I best filming this in 4K and zooming in post? Or filming it in 1080p with the 2x Center Scan (to double my zooming in)? I'm shooting this with a Canon lens @ 300mm with a Metabones (1.5x crop) = 450mm effectively. I figure that it would be 900mm effectively with the Center Scan. The results in 1080p with Center Scan looked sharper - but maybe I did something wrong per shooting in 4K?
* How stopped down should it be to capture detail? Should I be stopping all the way down to f/45? I read something about diffraction if it is stopped down to far?
* Any thoughts on shooting in Slog3 and ISO/Gain? I figure the lower the ISO the better?
* As this isn't photography, just leave the shutter speeds to match the video (I'm guessing shoot in 4K60p - so it'll automatically stay at 1/60)?
* Suggestions for the totality phase? Obviously it means some super-fast footwork as soon as I take the filter off... I'm guessing quickly try to shoot wide open?
As I have super-limited WiFi and no cellphone data service - I'll check back in later - I may not be able to respond quickly. Whatever you guys can suggest - please let me know ASAP as I need to practice the correct settings today and tomorrow at the latest.
Cheers and thanks, everyone!
