Best format to Shoot?

Yeah but don't forget that the 720p/60 has less mud in fast shots, can easily be converted to 24p in post, and can be used to get instant good slow mo at any time.

One thing I am curious about, if you convert 720p/60 footage to 24p in post, will it essentially look the same as if you originally shot at 24p and give you that same film look?

Sometimes. Sometimes not. For an action scene maybe, but for a dolly shot, probably not quite.

It also depends on what software you use to do the conversions.

After heavily testing my GH1 side by side with my 5d over the past two weeks I personally will rarely be using the 1080p24 function.

Mud is an issue but much much worse with a high shutter. Keep your shutter at 1/50 and the motion blur takes care of most of the complaints people have although know that heavy motion is a definite weakness.

The main reason I will be staying away from the 1080 most of the time is the fact that there is major blocking in the Reds. I am someone who is willing to forgive most digital artifacting, but even when using neoscene with its "fix chroma" function, there is so much blocking in the colors. I guess if you stayed away from Red this would probably be fine, but it is a definite issue.

The other day, a prominent DP and I did tests, specifically trying to test the codec of the GH1 compared to the 5d.

I ran around with a bright red shirt in my hand. On the 5d this looked great and on the GH1 it was unusable. Even when I was standing still with the Red shirt the blocking was so obvious when played back full res. With that being said, the results comparing the 5d to the Gh1 were much more favorable when the GH1 was in 720, even when blowing the 720p footage up to 1080p.

Obviously just one person's experience, but I will say I have considered selling my GH1 multiple times in the past two weeks. I will be keeping it for a few reasons, however:

1. slowmo
2. great zoom range on the stock lens
3. Best autofocus I've ever used in any video camera. Simply awesome.
4. Ability to shoot for as long as the card lasts
5. 3+4 make it an amazing event video camera

so the main issue you have is its processing of motion and colour in 1080p? seems like 1080p isn't as refined as we had hoped. Care to elaborate on why you think the GH1 is more favourable to the 5d in 720? Colour blocking has become abit of a concern for me, the more clips i watch the more i see it, maybe because im looking for it now. Is it obviously evident in 720?

cheers.

Sorry - I didn't mean to write that I felt the GH1 was superior to the 5d at 720 but rather that the GH1's 720p blown up to 1080p is much better than the native 1080p (unless there is minimal color and nearly no motion).

The 5d is a much superior camera picture wise IMO. The GH1, however, if looked at as a 720p camera is absolutely astonishing for the size and price.

Sorry to get off topic with bringing up the 5d.

I ran my GH1 in FHD (full auto I confess) for twenty minutes last night from behind a soundbooth window looking down onto the stage at a concert hall where a famous classical musician was giving a recital.

I can't post footage, else I'd never work in this town again, but I can't see any noise problem where the light on the stage graduates from performance lighting into darkness. The lid of the piano is deep black as it should be, the musicians vigourous movements are artifact-free (as far as I can see), on the closer shots you can see every note on the music score, and the only significant problem is that I seem to incapable of holding the camera still even sitting down with both elbows propped on the table in front of me.

With one GH1 on a general shot intercut with closeups from a second one you'd have something like that very professonally covered. The limitation would mainly be the skill level of the cameraman.
