Best focus monitor?

I'm shooting a 7d and ex-1. I need a focus monitor, specificly for the 7d. I really would love to hear what everyone else is using. I also don't know the limits for the 7d's mini-hdmi output. Does it output a limited SD signal or a full born 1080p signal?

Anyways I'd like to mount this monitor on my redrock rail, and i'd prefer it to be phantom powered. Although I'm will to go battery powered for higher quality.

What's your price range? There's quite a few discussions on monitor solutions over on Cinema5d

The 7D outputs a 1080i signal through HDMI, BTW.

A decent lower-price option would be one of the models from Manhattan LCD. The SmallHD DP1 is better quality, higher resolution. But it's more expensive, and you could probably get an even better monitor at a higher price. As Rory_B said, your choice will depend on your price range.

I could spend up to about $1500, but I don't really want to spend that much if I don't need too. I'll check out all the stuff on 5DCinema. and report back to with my decision. As for being good/bad in the sun, I wouldn't count on that a factor in my decision, Hoods can easily solve that.
thanks you guys.

if anybody has one, i'd like to get some insight into the manhattan hd071a...looks pretty comparable to the 7" marshall. it seems to lack most of the marshall's features, but can anybody comment on any of the manhattan lcds functionality and image quality versus the marshalls if i were to use one with a 7d?

basically i'd like to know if the higher resolution and cheaper price are worth it compared to the marshall's convenience and features...

The new Marshall line is my monitor of choice. Specifically the V-LCD70P series.
The built-in focus and exposure controls along with the light weight and power options make this a winner in my opinion.

I've owned/used both of the other monitors in this post and while the price of the Manhattan is attractive, the power solution and the build quality are not the best. The DP-1 is built very well, has higher resolution than the Marshall, and frankly is a sexy SOB, but the size and weight turned me off. I've never found myself missing the extra pixels that the DP-1 affords.

After all, I'm not sitting down to watch a movie on my monitor, I'm using it for (quick) critical focus, framing and correct exposure. Good luck with your purchase.
