Looking to purchase a lens with the range of 24-70mm for my Canon 7D DSLR. I was very interested in the Canon 24-70 f2.8 "L" but am starting to think that its not worth the $1200 price tag. I'm also not sold on how heavy the thing is and the fact that it doesn't have hard focus stops (something obviously important for video work with a follow focus) Does anyone have any suggestions and or opinions of glass in this price range?

I don't think you'll find a new zoom in that range and speed for $500, even the indies go for much more.
How about S/H manual primes? Say 24, 35, 50, 80? Primes at that speed are reletively cheep, and you don't have to buy eveything at once.
Of course, you may need a zoom, in which case I can only suggest looking for S/H again.

Tamron 17-50mm 2.8

So versatile, so sharp, so awesome. I got mine for under $300 on ebay.

IMO, especially for the 7D crop, 24 may not be wide enough for some situations.

You are about the 5th person to recommend this lens...do you use a Follow Focus on this lens or pull focus from the barrel?

I used the Sigma 24-70 2.8 and thought it was excellent for the price. I have the L now and love how fast and quiet the focus is for still but for video I'd still be happy with the Sigma. I think I sold it for $300 something? Canadian.

id give the tamron the edge for the extra wide angle. Especially if your ever going to have to shoot inside, wider the better.

I'm really just starting to move into DSLR video from stills, I've been a stills guy for more years than I care to think about, though not pro.
From that I'm more of a primes sort of bloke, so I'd be looking at Pentax M42, Russian M42, Nikons if you can afford them, or Contax / Yashica if you're flush, and Leica / Leitz "R" if you're really flush lol.

For reference, my primes set are 21 f/4 Leitz Super Angulon, 50 f/1.7 Contax Planar, 85 f/2 Jupiter-9, 135 f/2 Canon L (A swine to focus wide open), and a 180 f/3.4 Leitz Apo-Telyte "R", razor sharp and contrasty, even wide open.

The two Leitz and Jupiter have very long focus throws, 270 deg (Jupiter) to 330 deg (21mm), while the 50 is shorter, but still around 180 deg. The 135 is by far the shortest, which makes it a real pain.

Thanks Dave! Very helpful

Any thoughts on Zeiss primes with EOS mount? I may end up getting something pretty wide and then buying a 28-75mm zoom!

I'm not sure but think they have electronic iris control. The consensus seems to be to get the ZF primes and use an adapter, since you then have a real iris ring and can use them on other cams besides Canon. I wouldn't know for myself, as they're out of my price range.

On a BTW, if you're interested in either Contax / Yashica or Leica glass for your Canon, Pebble Place www.pebbleplace.com have table listing compatability.
