best external eSATA drives for HD editing

My new system has a port for an external eSATA drive. I have an internal RAID 0 array, but I like the idea of being able to keep a project on external drives and swap it out as I switch projects.

Is there any downside to running a project (1080p) from an external eSATA drive through the eSATA connection on the back of my PC? What drives have you found that offer the same speed and reliability as an internal eSATA RAID 0 might be offering.

(I'm assuming eSATA is faster than Firewire 800.)

Thanks for any advice!

You can get an eSATA chassis and use any drive you want. There is a green Western Digital 750 that is supposed to be very quiet. Any SATA drive (including eSATA) will be able to keep up with DVCProHD or DNxHD.

Any single drive will be statistically more reliable than a RAID 0 configuration on a per MB basis. On a RAID 0 if you loose either one of the two drives you loose it all, and the likelyhood of having a bad drive is doubled cause there is two of them. If you value your work you might see if your computer will support a third internal drive and a RAID5 configuration.
