For a short list of sequels, not to repeat too much...

Spiderman 2
X-Men 2
Star Trek 2
T2
Chasing Amy/Mallrats
Aliens [a different kind of good, not better]
Ocean's Twelve [a different kind of good, not better]
and
Highlander 2 [just kidding]

Wow I really liked how the could make Highlander2 so unlogical. Of course Ramirez must be a universal name as would highlander be. What a good luck they were reborn in Scotland and Spain. ;)

I like Die Hard: With a Vengeance (III) about as much as Die Hard (I). Do not care for Die Hard 2.
I also like Aliens better.
Spiderman is my favorite superhero, so frankly I like both.
Like all the Star Wars, and LOTR, but do not like Matrix II, III as much as the original.

I certainly agree with a lot of these, but what about Toy Story II?

Now if I had to vote for "biggest improvement sequel" that would of course be Wrath of Khan. Most sequels are worse, some are as good as the first, a few incrementally improve, but ST2 blows ST1 away.

X Men 2, Rocky 2, Toy Story 2, Superman 2, Batman Begins, Rambo: FB 2, Spider-Man 2, Empire Srikes Back, Dawn of the Dead...

let's not forget Troll 2, Critters 2/3, Leprachaun 2, 3 and Back to da Hood, Exorcist 2: The Heretic, Queen of the Damned....

My fav sequels are "The Godfather II" and "Empire Strikes Back" "X-Men 2" and I honestly like "Back to the Future Part II" better than the original.... that's just my opinion though

The best sequel ever made was James Cameron's Aliens. It actually surpassed the original in almost every area but horror.

Second on my list would be Godfather II.

Die Hard 2 is usually considered a good sequel but in my book it added nothing new.

Terminator 2 was only made to provide Ahh-nolld an opportunity to be the "good" guy, and try to make up for being the bad guy. For me, there was no need to continue after the original The Terminator.

Nice post Blaine.

Neither Die Hard sequel has been good enough to watch twice for me; and I think the orginal is one of finest films ever made.

Fright Night 2 I believe surpasses the original

FINALLY, someone besides ME has seen both films and is in agreement with me! Michael Mann's Manhunter is so vastly superior to hack-director, Brett Ratner's piece-of-utter-crap version, Red Dragon, it's not even funny. Some of the scenes in each film are verbatim, line-for-line, the exact same dialogue. But Michael Mann's Manhunter is so more expertly crafted. The staging, the blocking, the casting . . . it's all there in Manhunter. Watch identical scenes from each film and you'll be amazed how bad Harvey Keitel and Edward Norton are in them (due to the writing and direction). Ralph Fiennes as the "Dolarhyde" character is the mis-cast of the century.

If you've never seen either film, watch Manhunter first, then watch Red Dragon. If you've seen Red Dragon, but haven't seen Manhunter, you need to see it. If you've seen Manhunter but haven't seen Red Dragon, you're in for a good laugh.

These two films are TERRIFIC examples of how different directors working with much the same material, working with different actors came up with such dramatically different results.

The color in Manhunter is what gets me . . . the deep saturation, the plays of red against blue . . . so weird to think that the two movies were shot by the same DP.

Am I the only one, though, who thinks Will Graham in Manhunter IS a younger Gil Grissom? It would inform the Grissom character quite a bit.

I LOVE Manhunter. I think Brian Cox's portrayal of Hannibal Lechter is much more terrifying than the over-the-top performance by Anthony Hopkins...not that I don't like Hopkins, it's just the subtleties of the Cox character that I find superior. Interesting take on Gil Grissom...

and now Hannibal Rising...a prequel?
