was wondering what do people consider the best editing program. I use premeire 2.0. Love it. Just wondering what others use. And how can you acheive the best possible footage after editing is done. When exporting. And nice clean picture. Is your comp memory and processor speed have to do with that. Or is it just your export settings?

The best editing program is the one which best serves your purposes and preferences.

Export settings have everything to do with your export quality. Processor speed has everything to do with how quickly it will get done.

for me, best = avid
for effects = autodesk smoke

quick editing = vegas
quick effects = after effects

I have heard people swear by Vegas and Final Cut. Depends on if you are mac based or PC based.

Avid is in another league really.

I think that the AVID Media Composer with the MoJo SDI is the best, with the AVID tool kit for effects and authoring. Dont go with Premeire pro or any other versions it is just to unstable. Some time your audio with play sometime not sometime no video etc... just not worth the hassle for profesional editting. But I guess its okay for student use or just playing around.

Kind of a blanket statement. Pretty condescending too.

For the record I use Vegas and love it. I think the Avid Media Composer is a piece of junk, but hey, people use it.

I started on premiere then moved to final cut pro. My job used premiere and it worked well, but I still prefered Final Cut Pro. I had my job buy FCP and I changed some of my keyboard shortcuts to match Premieres. I used vegas for a couple of hours last weekend and it is just as good. Interface is suited for musician more than editors, but it works. I have also used Liquid edition and thought that this was probably the best as it made me feel like I was opening a dedicated operating system just for editing. Also the background rendering was awesome! I moved to FCP because of the extra programs that came with it. Motion,DVD Studio Pro,Soundtrack Pro, Livetype, and Garageband. Yes I know garageband doesn't come with final cut pro but if you have a mac you have it.
So to sum it all up they all work pretty well. Some features in certain programs will make you choose which program to get. All of these programs are amazing for editing. If you are just editing get FCP Express.

an editing program, is just an editing program.

a good editor can do more with iMovie, than a bad editor can do with AVID nitris

This is insulting. The latest version of Premiere is extremely stable. And I'm sure you can find plenty of other user complaints about instabilities in the other NLE as well, not just on Premiere. I've seen features edited on Premiere and I'm still not sure what your definition of "professional editing" is.

I've been using Vegas for the last 2 years on a PC & two HP laptops daily and in the last 6 months I've probably had one crash.
I just love that you can keyframe everything and you don't need a $$$$ proprietary video card to make it work.
Last year I looked at Premier, FCP & Edius but they're just so different to Vegas - I'm just too comfortable with Vegas.

Just find something that looks friendly and learn to use it well :)

Started with Premiere, it wasn't too bad, moved to FCP, it's pretty good.

if I was able to buy it... avid ds nitris, cut together some dailies with it, so sweet. multi-stream 10 bit 2k or 4k render free...

NLE programs are many paths up the same mountain. all do the same thing, just get you there differently....
best bet is to know how to operate a wide variety of different NLE programs, and use what you have access to, and keep the project paramount, not what you're using to do it.

but if I had to choose, FCP, just cause that's what i'm using now...

Final Cut is my choose. The learning curve is not as steep as Avid. I have both. Plus you get more of a turn key out the box get started set up wth FCP.

Hope this helps.
