is there any opinion on which DV codec to capture with ? I hear that there are several that are better than Microsofs such as avids and the sony codec. But I need something that will just capture and then teh movies will import ok into after effects.

Heh, I didn't even know there were other codecs; I take it the alternatives aren't free though?

Canopus

Canopus

Most believe Canopus holds up the best, the problem is being able to capture in canopus if you don't have the program...

this is a great question. I have read canopus is good also but you do have to have the hardware.

I too want the best looking DV capture codec (and yes I know uncompressed is but those are way too big.... I only have 1 terrabyte :)

Each NLE will use it's own codec. You are hooked on it's codec [unless you output to anather format like MPEG etc]. I think all the front runners like Adobe, Avid, FC, Vegas etc have top notch codec's. "Better" or "Best" could be very subjective. I've yet to hear of codec issues being a detriment to image quality on the NLE's.

as far as i am aware, after effects does not have its 'own' codec. Up till now I have used MIcrosofts as i capture usind studio DV .... but I understand that the MS dv codec is pretty poor compared with others. Looking at adobes site it looks as if AE will be able to use clips compressed with avids dv codec so I will try this. The general vibe on the web seems to be that mainconcept, canopus, avid etc... dv codecs are most definitely superior to the microsoft codec and thats no just on regeneration but on straight visual quality.

External HD recorders suchs Firestore, Citydisk, etc. do provide options for capturing to disk in different codec formats (Avid, Canopus and MS are all covered). If you also record on tape you still keep a chance for raw capturing at a later stage.
