Best Compression Settings for 4k for YouTube?

Hey all,

Just got the Panasonic GH4 and wondered what the best compression settings would be for 4K footage for upload to YouTube to maximize quality while not having ridiculously large files to upload? I assume h.264 but what data rate?? This is to master in 4K as opposed to taking 4K footage and mastering in a 1080p project. Thanks!

Vimeo doesn't accept 4K uploads at the moment, right?

Wrong. Vimeo does accept 4K uploads. I have uploaded GH4 and AX100 100Mbps (after editing) 4K videos that were happily converted by Vimeo to 1080 streaming.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing that. Do we know what bit rate Vimeo compression uses to process 4K video and covert into 1080p in this situation? I wonder if that approach of uploading 100 Mbps 4K video and letting vimeo do the processing and conversion to 1080p yields higher quality than mastering oneself to 1080p and then uploading the 1080p video to Vimeo?

In making a 1080p master from a 4K video, what would be the ideal bit rate to use to upload to Vimeo or YouTube?

I've asked myself the same questions and find it very frustrating that Vimeo's website fails to provide its customers with critically important information like this.

I could not agree more with this quote does this change though with a pro account ?

Yeah I have wondered this myself. But hey it is an easy test. Just upload the same video twice once as 4K and one 1080p. And see if there is a quality difference (I would do it, but I only have a free account so I can only upload 500mb per week)? They probably will not advertise it because they probably want to save disk space and avoid 4K at all.
