Best Compression for Youtube?

I am sure this has been answered somewhere, but when i searched I only found 3 results and only one was worth reading and it didnt help.

I have a edited piece in vegas 7 and i just want to render it as a non quicktime file that keeps clean enough quality to upload to the web but still has a small file size.

I know in premiere i usually got a 3 minute long video down to like 25 or 30 mb with decent quality with the "wmp9 NTSC download 1024kbs" setting.

Everything I try in vegas makes my video either really big in size, or really blocky in picture

Anyone have a favorite set of settings they use to compress their videos?

thanks

Steven:

Compression is a moving target and varies with content. Videos that have fast action and rapidly changing scene set-ups are harder to minimize without compression artifacts. Video that has limited motion i.e., talking head shots with unchanging backgrounds will handle more compression. YouTube will add their own compression so its a bit of art and science.

I would trying outputing your piece at the lowest bit rate possible for acceptable viewing (your standard) on you system. Upload and see how YouTube affects it. If it worsens considerably then recompress at a higher bit rate and re-submit the video. After a while of uploading to YouTube you should get a feel for the range of compression you can use depending on the video content.

Good luck,

S Cannon

I put almost all my short films on youtube, and I have found that

'WM9 512kbs video' (wmv file) is a very good size. 10 minutes works out as about 15mb. The quality is great, and when you set it to fullscreen in youtube, it looks great as well.
