Best cinelike DVX settings? What do you think?

Draccan, delaro is not kidding when he talks about lighting. It is a critical element in the film look. It can create dimension where none would otherwise exist on a two dimensional plane.

Read "Matters of Light and Depth", a book by Ross Lowell and you will learn how to create great film looks.

In the meantime, here is my opinion on settings (taken from the FAQ on my Website):

I have found that video noise is very prevalent in this camera using the presets for f5 or f6 and I can attribute it to the Cine matrix. I changed that to NORM and made sure gamma was set to Cine-Like (not D or V) and the noise level during low light shooting is drastically reduced.

Hope this helps

I'm constantly experimenting but I have my chroma level at +4 or +5...it varies.

I've already documented this stuff on my site so I would suggest you go there if you want more details (click on the faq link in my signature below) but don't blindly copy settings, what appeals to me is not necessarily going to appeal to you.

Cine-like D does indeed raise the noise, but I prefere cinelike V over all other gammas. It is harder to shoot with, you really have to wathch your highlights, but with carefull shooting you can get some great looking footage. I would also move your master ped down to a minimum of about -6 or -7, otherwise you don't have a true black. True black comes in right about there. I usually like to go lower than that on my Master P, but that fits my shooting style and the look I want, you can do whatever works for you. Here is what I do, shoot a couple of test scenes, use different settings on your camera, play them back later, and pick what you like the best.

I recommend Cinelike, not D or V (V is good for better contrast, if you can't do Post in your footage), looks like cinelike has the better lattitude of the 3, no knee.

Ok for us old school dvx100 guys. I have been having a problem with noise in all the dark areas, and sometimes in certain (rich) colors. Is this due to the matrix being set on cinelike? also I agree about dropping the master ped, it seems the black has a hint of blue above say -5.

Don't forget you always can improve blacks in Post, but not bring back details lost in black.
