So do cat's eyes bokeh have more character than round ones?
I don't know, but I would definitely say the older Zeiss super speeds with the triangular bokeh has more character. I was actually confused about what I was looking at the first time I used them.
I used to notice the triangular aperture on some of Ken Burns stuff(I believe his brother shot a lot, if not almost all of his docs).
His regular DP for many years was Buddy Squires. I had dinner with him once in the early 90's when I was living in Northampton MA, Burn's production company Florentine Films was based nearby. They were thinking about doing some Steadicam on an upcoming doc and I was the only Steadicam operator for many miles around. Unfortunately it never came to fruition!
On those MK1 Superspeeds....perfect example of the truly subjective nature of what is desirable in a lens. We had a set of those on Key & Peele first season, not because they were cool/trendy (they weren't then) but because they were cheap. After dealing with the huge and weirdly shaped flares on the sketch below, I never wanted to see them again (we actually tracked power windows in the grade to try to knock them back). To me, they just got in the way of the image I wanted to make.
