Best Canon EF Adapter?

Just read solid cameras twitter and they are coming out with a canon and nikon mount with internal nd filters and iris control. I hope they come out with it fast because I'm ready for the canon mount and with internal nd's and iris control the fs100 turns into a monster. Thankyou solid camera.

MTF is a dumb adapter, so conurus is more interesting IMO. Can control Iris and IS.

Mico: ND filters would be awesome in an adapter!

MTF also makes a smart canon mount but the one the op linked to is the dumb one.

solid camera posts here so maybe he'll jump in and give us good news that their adapter will be out soon.

Our Nikon and Canon mounts will be nearly identical, but the Nikon will land first because the demand for that one is very high. They have our Double Lock, 170 degree geared aperture ring, internal ND filter wheel, and positive bayonet lock similar to PL mounts. The Nikon will be delivering soon but it is sold out, the Canon will be about NAB time.

....Canon will be about NAB time.

That's Great!

Can you give us any more info on it?

For example:
Any general idea on what it's going to cost?
How is it powered? (externally or by the camera?)
Does it support IS?

I'm definitely going to get one (if I have the money) for the Iris control and ND filters, if it supports IS, that's just icing on the cake.

The Nikon version is all mechanical while the EF version is electronic - the only way IMO. It is powered by the camera so not external power is required. IS support may or may not happen - based on demand. For me personally, I don't think I would use it. With that said, we are driven by our customers hopes and dreams, not me alone. We will likely over run the first batch so that we will have inventory afterwards. These mounts are truly targeting the professional shooter. The Double Lock, positive lock stainless steel bayonet, and geared 170 degree iris ring is testament to that. The filter wheel offers a unique speed benefit when changing lenses frequently. These are 100% USA - design, materials, machines, assembly, and software. Even the various chemicals and cutting tools we use are made in the USA. The only thing we outsource is anodizing, which happens a few miles away.

Sounds good!

I think this is the first truly well thought out Nikon/Canon to E-Mount adapter.

Looking forward to getting one.

Wow, great news, built in ND filters is just the cherry on top! going to have to invest in some EF lenses then :)

For me, EOS IS support is pretty essential, especially when going to all the other trouble to make it electronically controllable, why wouldn't you included IS? The IS on the Canon EF 24-104 L is very nice, as well as on the EF-S 17-55 2.8, and the 70-200 2.8. The Canon IS is very smooth and organic, and is great for hand held work. Also, you competitor, Conurus/Metabones supposedly supports IS, so I think this is also incentive. Any idea of the street price on your EF adapter?

Does B&H sell the smart mount…..or can someone just point me to a link where it is for sale?

Thanks for the insight, Mico. If I go the MTF route, I may have to go with the lower-end model that the OP linked. The box adapter makes it too rich for my budget.

It doesn't sound like you're aware of this so let me save you $400. The MTF adapter that OP linked is a "dumb" adapter and does not provide aperture control. Why they would even sell that for $400 is beyond me. It's exactly same as cheap $20-40 adapter you find on Ebay in terms of functionality. Since the MTF electronic adapter is out of you budget, your best bet is the Conurus/Metabones adapter, which does everything what MTF electronic adapter does and has a better design (no external box). Also, there won't any other similar adapters coming out at that price point. It'll be more closer to MTF price.

When it comes to the FS100, I'm about as hip as Travis Bickle in a whorehouse. I've got a lot of catching up to do.

I've been living in DSLR land for the last two years and loving every minute of it. (in terms of "the look" anyways. functionality…not so much)

As for the metabones adapter, hell yes, that's the one I want. I guess I'm just going to be playing the waiting game until they crank out the next batch. Or another affordable adapter comes along with aperture control.

Yeah, I've got (IMO) a nice investment in Canon glass and wouldn't want to put some 30 buck adapter between an expensive camera and EF lens. I read some horror stories about those adapters getting stuck on the lens. I'm thinking MTF can justify the insane price with the fact that the adapter is a solid build vs the cheapie Amazon/eBay models.

I just wish Canon made a C300-type camera in the 5 grand range and I didn't have to deal with any of this nonsense. Unfortunately, I had to jump ship from Canon (XHA1) because I can't wait for that. I need to be shooting now.

but thanks for your input, jetswing.

I've got both the MTF smart adapter and the Metabones smart adapter for canon EOS. The MTF adapter is very nice, however, it has a cable sticking out of the adapter that is permanently afixed to the adapter. The removeable connector is at the control box end. This makes it very inconvenient to use just the adapter after setting the aperture. Out of 5 EOS IS lenses I have, 4 work with the optical stabilizer, one does not work.

I just received the metabones adapter, so I'm still checking it out. It works well with one EOS lens I've tested, however, it doesn't appear to be supporting the IS function on this lens. The aperture also makes quite a loud noise when it is moved. The noise ruins any audio recording you may be making with the on camera mike.
